Being guitar players and not likely to use many keyboards am I missing out on any must have plug-ins (compressors, verbs etc) or simulators by using Express instead of going the whole hog with Studio. I'll mainly be writing and recording my own stuff, using a roland electric kit and recording guitars and bass. Obviously I'll be using my real amp as it can't be touched by a simulator but for instance does Studio have far superior drum samples or bass amp simulators than Express? Thanks for any feedback..

Trev, if you got the coin get Studio...

Hey Ed, Are there some general but standout differences. For instance does Studio have accurate, vintage style compressor plug-ins that express doesn't have. Does Studio have much more mastering tools/capability. I mainly used Soundforge for that in the past. I guess I'm unsure about studio if what it has more of is just more of a sample library or midi functionality which I won't need. I should go to the Apple store and see if there's a Logic sensei ;)

Are you in L.A permanantly now? Still working with Andy?

My main reason why I sprang for the extra dough version was...
- Space Designer
- Delay Designer
- Linear Phase EQ
- Match EQ
- MainStage - a live performance tool
- WaveBurner - a CD editing/mastering app
- SoundTrack Pro - an audio editing utility that can be "integrated" with Logic
- Impulse Response Utility - a tool that allows you to create your own Space Designer reverbs
- Compressor - a utility that facilitates delivery of audio/video in virtually any format
- Apple Loops Utility/QuickTime Pro

When I went to the Apple stiore they were pretty useless...I'd say do some reading...

Yeah, I've been down here since weekend after thanksgiving permanently. Still have to get back up there and finish fixing up my house so I can rent it out. Still working for Andy, all I need for that is a phone and internet.

Definitely go with Studio. Been using Logic Studio 8 for a couple years now, and I absolutely love it. I tried Logic express, but found it too limiting. As I understand it, express does not support external software instruments, so you're pretty much stuck with what comes in the box. Also the extensive loop library is very handy for getting the creative juices flowing.

I guess I can always upgrade to Studio so I'll get Express to start and if it's not enough I'll do the upgrade.

Ed, Once you got to L.A. how long did it take you to get shitfaced with Reinhold? :D

Space Designer is reason enough. That reverb plugin rules too hard. I would go studio also. All the synth stuff is great to in Logic.

Does express have decent B3 or Rhodes plug-ins, or any of the late 70's early, 80's synth sounds? Or is that in Studio? If I was going to do any keyboard stuff it would be with those sounds.

+1 +1 +1

I was going to say that exact same thing. I always used space designer at the old studio I was at to get sweet sounding custom reverbs, but buying Express 9 and not having it is a bit of a bummer. That and having a non-tweakable multipressor really softens my hard drive. Other than that, there really is nothing wrong with express, and if you don't need those features then go for it. The new amp sims in 9 are extremely fun to play with, I am particularly fond of the Orange model. There are plenty of other reverbs and compressor models bundled in with express and you won't miss the Space Designer plug if you have never used it before.

You're lucky I spent three weeks on nice beaches in Australia last September. So you're only crushing me a little. I hold onto that memory like a fat chick holds onto a Dorito. Plus I remember L.A.
Ironically the winter this year has been very mild.

Buy Express and the Upgrade to Studio, you will save 1$ (199+299=498$ instead of 499$ for Studio)
