I am looking for another 4x12 because I have a sickness, but am currently running myself in circles….I would like to get something to compliment and expand on what I already have in both the cabinet construction as well as speakers.

Amp wise, plenty to match with: Hermanssons, Ground Zero, Lenz, Uber, Wizard…
Baritone to standard tuning. Russian Circles to Thrice to Fiddlehead to Cursive to Tool….

Currently have:
Older Marshall checkerboard slant loaded with Fane F70s
VHT fatbottom straight with scumbacks (H and J75 in X pattern)
Fryette D412 straight with Redback and V30 in an X pattern

Looking at/thinking about: Atlas, Mojotone Grand Canyon, KSR, Sound City (new Fryette version), other?

For Speakers am thinking some mix of Scumback BM75lds with redbacks or v30s, Creamback H75/m65 mix, or???

Have had a few Mesa, Bogner and Splawn cabs in the past; they’re fine but didn’t stand out to me. Obviously variations and speaker choice can play into that. Foolishly let go of the most resonant cab I found, a Framus 4x12 with V30s….seemed somewhat similar to Soldano in construction but tough to really say? Haven’t seen another one of those in the wild in years

Marshall 1960ax (or similar) with greenbacks of your choice. Best sounding cab I’ve ever owned. I have one with UK reissues on bottom and EVH on top. I have another with an X pattern of UK reissues and WGS Green Berets.

I own an AX and BX and those cabs aren’t going to hold up to the amps in his arsenal. My BX can’t handle Abaddon. A rattling baffle mess for amps delivering serious punch especially with swapping speakers out for more efficient drivers.

If the OP doesn’t like Mesa or Bogner or Splawn, the company making Bogner cabs (BAD) also makes Friedman and a few others.

IMO if you hate Splawn cabinets then the next thing I’d recommend are KSR cabs.

Not going to say I hate Splawn or Bogner cabs; more that I had them at the same time as my Marshall and moved them along. Similar enough cabinet voicing/construction, less general resonance/liveliness when loaded similarly. Really just a function of cab to cab variability I am sure; just happen to have a really good one with this particular Marshall

Marshall cabs hold up just fine, when I pummeled them with a Strategy 400/C+. No rattle, strange sounds etc. The issue with those GB cabs are the 25w speakers..can they hold up? If anyone has a ‘rattlly’ cab of any kind, it’s a simple fix…take the back off, and re tighten the screws. Many of them have been pounded for years with high volume….10 minutes of your time fixes all.

I get those Fatbottom cabs sound excellent. That's one cab I probably shoulda kept. I had the VHT fatbottom 2x12. It was light, Easy to move around and looked great. Paired it with a Carvin Legacy head, which worked well cuz the Legacy was kinda dark, and the front loaded VHT cab made it tighter and more up front.

Strange as it may sound, I've recently acquired an old Peavey 412 MS - a really well built front-loaded cab, and I replaced 2 of the Sheffield 1290s it with Mojotone BV30s and I must say I love it. You might want to give the cab a chance and experiment with some speakers, but I can't stress how much I like these Mojotone speakers. When stock the cab sounded really dark and scooped but not anymore

I have no skin in your game and im a hard sell when it comes to guitar speakers but the EVH 5150 III UK made Blackbacks slay.
Authentic re-creation of my 1978 G12M Blackback cab.
I only paid $300 for mine.

If you have to keep taking the cab apart to tighten the speakers then that’s my point to begin with. Mine are not originals but reissues. The baffles are not thick enough and you need an attached center post.

OP don’t sleep on OG peavey 5150 cabinets. Swap the speakers out to your preferences.

I'll put a vote in for the EVH cabs with the " Eddie " backs
It’s a great speaker…….tighter, faster, and clearer in the mids than the UK reissue g12m’s. But the EVH cab itself is significantly more scooped and not as punchy as the 1960ax. That’s why I robbed the speakers and put them in the top of my 1960ax.

I will say the EVH cab opens up with volume, but the 1960ax works better across all volume levels. Then again, it could just be the slant effect.

I tried a EVH cab when I retolexed one for a client .... I like the speakers so much I bought 8 of them and filled two 1960A's with them

I run my Rockstah mod 5 plexi clone and my Soldano SLO 100 though that EVH 4x12 cab and it’s pure magic

You should only have to do it once…..unless you’re a touring pro who plays hundreds of gigs per year, and uses high volume.
The center brace is a valid concern though; my vintage Marshall cabs have them and I’ve kept most of them vs the 900 series cabs that don’t have that brace

Zilla 412 OS. I wanna get one myself once I clear up enough space selling other amps and cabs

Agreed. I think that EVH speaker iirc really is a 20w Greenback, which I always greatly preferred to the 25w M Greenbacks. Like you said much tighter, faster, no nasal/bloated mids, but rather much more aggressive and grindy like a chainsaw. My favorite non-vintage speaker. My 2 all time favorite speakers are ‘60’s 20w GB’s and Altec 417B’s

Honestly EVH cabs are where its at for the money....... quality stuff too.....

If you have more cash check out Bad Cat cabs :dunno:

VBOUTIQUE is worth mention too and if you have a bit more money than you would for an EVH cab worth considering too and a lot of value. OEM for a lot of BOUTIQUEs.
