Looking for a heavy amp to blend with a Marshall.

It's everything great about the SLO/Recto/5150 type of amps but none of the bad. They're just a solid modern high-gain amp. The Gemini kind of has a slight Uberschall character to it, since it has a bit more of a low-mid emphasis. But it has plenty of switches and modes that help you dial in whatever sound you want. It has a nice guttural growl and wouldn't step on the toes of a Marshall in a mix.

Definitely easier to dial in than a Recto, that's for sure. And you can use whatever type of tubes you want. FX loop is good too—one of the best I've used.

I don't know, I'm not really a Recto guy, more Marshall but it took me all of 5 minutes to dial in the Triple I have. People say "you have to dial them way different than a Marshall"? I dialed it the SAME as my Marshalls, then adjusted a little bit. Presence maxed, treble off, Mids/Bass at noon. Slowly bring up the treble, for me at around 9am. Then back off the mids and bass a bit...hit it with a boost. Just like my Marshalls. Set like that through 65s, sounded very close to my last SLO but with way more tight low end.

I’m not a Rectifier guy at all, but a Dual Rectifier pairs perfectly with a Marshall. Just fills out the low mids and bottom perfectly without getting in the way of that Marshall snarl. I think they get flubby though, and don’t think they sound good with those oversized cabinets everyone uses, it that’s partly because I hate tubescreamers and prefer making the amp/cab be tight enough and high pass filter out what I don’t need when recording.

I’ve always been an amp blender guy and my fav has been my Marshall and an old rev 2 Uberschall. I actually had to fire up an old session this week and the guitars were insane. I solod the Marshall and then the Uber. Man they complimented each other. Clarity and mid attack with the Marshall and booty and gue from the Uber. I can’t find a rev 2. Is there anything else that would do the trick? Take the place of the Uber?

You've been through enough amps over the years James with all your ampfest comparisons. You already know the Bogner does it for you and anything less than that is going to disappoint you and waste your time. Bogner tone is unique and unto itself, I don't think there is anything that emulates it.

With that said there is a Rev 2 on Reverb right now... Just sayin.....

James, you and I go way back and we've talked tone in depth. Literally out of all of the amplifiers in that ampfest almost a decade ago, the Fortin bones and your Bogner Rev2 were the two that left me in shock the most. Anything else is sub-par and won't cut it with your mixing skills putting them to the test. Your ears are good, so trust them and don't settle for less.

I came across tons of posts over the years where people said the Recto was such a pain to dial in and because of those comments I steered clear. Well about six months ago I finally took the plunge and grabbed a MW Dual Recto, and it took me all of about 5 minutes to dial in great tones Like you I set treble to 0 and dial in presence, mids, bass to taste, smack with a good od &

Debatable.

Undertow and Opiate were the modded Marshall SB.
Aenima was Marshall/Recto but it didn't sit well, enter the VH4/Marshall mix; out with the Recto.
Lateralus was all VH4/Marshall, Sunn Beta Lead mixed at times.
10,000 Days had a number of other amps in there too - all flavours to test drive. But his core sound was VH4/Marshall SB

James - you've got good ears man - you need to complement the lower mids as a sonic handshake to what you already have. Depends how stiff you want it too, or chewy and grinding. Low mids and thick, VH2. Possibly a TwinJet Purple with a few 5751 in the preamp stack to give it grind and grain, will fill in the lower spectrum and low mids. But honestly man, you've got the ears for this project... You know what you need.

James, just had a brainfart while jamming tonight.

Rev.Blue - easy to get - monstrous low end. Load one up with JJ E34L tubes for the low-mid grind, and the bass from the native circuit will fill out the rest. Easy to come by, easy to sell. It'll match the Marshall.

2nd up would be a D-Moll, but they're pricier - but Ch.3 midcut would get you into the range. But for your needs, and minding the $$$, I'd recommend a Rev.Blue with the aforementioned power section.

Totally off topic to what James was asking, apologies - but I honestly don't know of any recordings "done" with the Mesa Recto - he tried it for Aenima - and dumped it for the Diezel. Whatever....

I went to several tool shows on the Aenima live tour. Never seen a VH4. Only the recto, and the Marshall. Maybe it came later, i guess.

That's great. I love reading Gearslutz about how stuff was recorded by the folks who recorded it.

I also like the Recto with the Marshall.
I also think Lugo would know more than most of us, given all the amp shootouts n such.

All I know is I saw them around 96-97, and he only had two amps on stage - his Marshall and a Recto. It’s one of the best live tones I’ve heard.
