imho the PRS customs (stop tail) will get you in the ball park without killing your back. the TA's and what not will sound killer but will not have that set neck\shorter scale type of sound. I have a Singlecut and recently parted with a custom 22 and can't say enough good things about either.

Check this one out, it's a Charles Cilia Aurora. It's obviously a hollowbody so lighter than a standard LP and this one also has a piezo pickup system which sounded great, I cranked it through a Bogner Shiva and there was no feedback, other than the controllable kind. I also played one that had a Bigsby and a charcoal burst finish which was unbelievable, Michael Dolce snapped that one up and is currently using it on The Voice Australia. Very versatile because you can blend in the Piezo but you can still get classic LP tones too.

Not sure what the weight is like, but the Taylor electrics are 24 7/8" scale length...

Parker Fly Classic - won't sound like an LP, but you may not care given the other advantages. I sold my LP to get my Parker and I have no regrets.

or

Peavey HP Custom
Find one with a mahogany body and maple cap. Sustain is great, weighs less than a LP, and the tone isn't far off from LP if you get one without a trem. They are kind of a PRS/Wolfgang hybrid.

They're chambered and very light, I've got some demos of mine in action on my YouTube channel /guitarnoize

Mine's a single cutaway but this will give you an idea how it sounds

Gibbo sg. I play mine more than my les paul these days, and for some reason it has about the same depth of tone

I'll cast my vote for a Suhr Modern or Standard. John has some of the best feeling necks and fretwork in the business, plus you can spec out your wood choices and such.

Parker nitefly m or nitefly mojo. The only Parkers with a mahogany body, and you can change the pickups with just about anything to try and fatten it up if you want. I will warn you those are hard to find good deals on though, and just in general hard to find

Parker fly classic also has a mahogany body.

if you love LP tone you may have a hard time finding that tone elsewhere. Have you considered perhaps a historic? A lot of those are 8lbs vs 10-12lbs of a LPC.

Also the new 2012 standards have a new weight relief system. I played one at GC and it felt pretty light in comparison to my Traditional Plus that weighs 9.6 lbs.

My two main live guitars are A LP Classic and a Tom Anderson HOLLOW Drop Top Classic. The TA is crazy light and awesome sounding, it's my favorite guitar.

I have a PRS Mira and it is super light. Sexy and sounds sweet.

Hey gang...

after many many years of struggling w a bad back ( have a few herniated discs) and playing alot w the Les Paul Custom...think i need to get a lighter axe to save myself a bit. Looking for a big full tone like my LP but gotta save some weight.

Been looking @ Suhrs , Andersons, etc...but not too familiar w them.

You can't go wrong with a Suhr, Paulie, well worth the drive to try one out.

This is my second one.

You should've known I was going to come in here and make a comment supporting PRS. The typical PRS is NOTHING like a LP.....

I'm with JD. I was in a similar situation with a back injury and a love for the Les Paul Custom. Hated PRS as all I'd ever seen locally were tobacco sunburst McCartys and strangely spec'd Custom 24's. Check in to the guitars he recommended and see if there's anything that you dig.

I would be looking at a custom builder...McNaught is a really good start..Huber Orca, a Collings...they can all get you close...but if you want that LP shape it will be hard to get in that 7-8 lbs weight limit...from PRS you would want something in the McCarty lineup if you are looking for LP tone...

I have the ideal solution to what you would want but the guy isnt building them any longer (I have the prototype) and it would be quite pricey if he was still doing it...weighs next to nothing compared to an LP (prolly 7 lbs tops), but the carbon is REALLY stiff and it has a killer meaty tone to it...its a limba body and neck and is hollow but a carbon fiber top and headstock overlay...it sounds nothing like a hollow gutiar..only thing I would change now is 2 volumes and 2 tones...

You ever tried an LP Elegant??? They are semi-hollow with no F-hole...so they should be lighter...not sure how it affects the tone though...I know a few guys that just love them, but I have never played one myself..

Suhr Modern Mahogany neck and body or TA is the way to go. I play a Modern, the other guiatr player in my band has a TA drop top w/roasted maple neck and mahogany body and it's probably the best sounding guitar I've heard at it's weight. His might be chambered, cause it's SOOOO damn light might be like 6 lbs.
