I've always shied away from the marshally type of amp. I always wanted something unique sounding. But oh, how the times have changed. I came across this Bogner Snorkler mod, and immediately was like, YUP, THAT'S THE SOUND IN MY HEAD. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I was thinking 20th Anniversary Shiva, but I've never played one. The only Marshally amps Ive played have been the Splawn Quickrod, and Nitro. (I leaned more towards the Nitro) Any suggestions??? Here's the video that smacked me in the face.

Honestly, it sounds like a JCM800 with a fuzz pedal.

But you can get that round, wooly, sludgy tone with an Uberschall or, like you guessed, a Shiva.

Hmmm...I don’t hear anything that resembles a fuzz pedal there. And the mids aren’t to Bognerish to my ear.

So, a while back I asked Ventura (who is a HUGE Bogner fan) which Bogner he would pick for Facelift tone. He said the regular Shiva, no reverb EL34s is the one. I never did pick one up to try, however.
That said, the amp that produced the Rhythm tones on that album was a 60s bassman according to the owner of the real Snorkler.
The Snorkler was used for leads and some cleans, but mostly Bassman goosed with BK Butler tube driver. The Tube Driver was also used with the Snorkler.

I'm not saying that's what's in the video. Just that's what it sounds like to me. I don't hear anything amazing there and I'm sure you could get to the same place with a JCM800 and a fuzz, boost, distortion pedal, OD, tube screamer... whatever.

The mids I think is where I'm having the issue. I think FourT6and2 is right with the JCM800 and a boost. It's the mids that always throw me off. A lot of other amps to me sound stuffy/congested if that makes sense? The part of the clip that I like is that it sounds almost neutral/clear in the mids. Again, I'm probably not explaining myself very well with universal terms, but it's like the blanket has been taken off. :dunno:

Dude that's actually a demo vid for the Cantrell Kemper profile pack from EXPCustom on here. That's his amp. Profiles kick ass and it's all I've been playing the last few days.

Grab Kemper
Buy this pack
??
Profit...

Then I need a Kemper too lol. Would probably solve all my problems.

To the OP I was going to say I think i saw some of those Randall Modules get modded with this mod too. Could be a cheaper alternative but if the Kemper does sound like this - I would go that route.

Everyone wants my amp.

By the way that's my amp in the clip and no it doesn't sound like an off the rack Shiva.

Seriously PM me and I can get you something damn close if you're serious. It will cost more than a new Kemper and the profile pack I sell of this amp. Just being honest...

Wow  ok I have to admit I am the biggest skeptic but this tone to me is completely amazing. So Stieny kind of explained to me how the Kemper translates to a miked amp so I guess it is impossible to be 100% identical to the actual amp. In this comparison I can definitely hear the subtle difference but at the same time it does not even matter in this case because that tone is freaking great.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like the holy grail. It sounds like diode or zener clipping maxxed out and that's why you are hearing some squeal between the riffing. It is a cool sound but I prefer to have it in and out. I have a granger push/pull "Jose" sort of deal (no arguing about the values, nobody cares, the point is to experiment) and these circuits shine when you use them in conjunction with a bit of a boost or EQ just to tighten them. People are obsessed with relying on the amp alone. Why not use all the tools available to you? Look at the mention of a Bassman with a tube driver. People were just using whatever sounded good to them. Then of course the engineer and the board which i seem to mention in all these "want to sound like" threads.

This amp has a ton of 12ax7 preamp tubes not the typical "Jose" or should I say Cameron diode clipping. If it was so "easy" to get this tone why haven't other amp manufacturers or designers done it?

What you are hearing in the OP's clip is just an in the room iPhone that the player was not even aware I was filming at the time.

So you're saying never-mind all that, I can get any amp to sound like that if I run a few pedals in front of it, a compressor and then through a mixing board?

I think the point is an amp that can do what you want without all the extra "tools" to get that tone, is why it's called the "Grail Tone".

Maybe nobody's "done it" because it honestly doesn't sound that great. If it were the end all be all, why hasn't Bogner made it a production model?

And as far as running a few pedals in front of a stock amp to get awesome tone, that's exactly how the majority of all the famous sounds on records everybody loves in the last 60 years were done. All the mystique and BS around the magical mojo of this or that amp... nonsense. Companies these days sell the idea that you can buy some boutique amp and it will make you a rock god. No. What separates the real rock gods from the wannabes is being able to plug into some beat up JMP that's probably not even biased properly and lay down some killer tracks and then go grab some bourbon at the local bar and not give two fucks about some Jorge mod or Scuba hot-rodded money sucker amp.

I'm obviously being a bit cynical here. Sure, cool gear is cool. And sure, cool gear can be fun. But man, people put way too much stock into this shit sometimes.

Thing is, New World Man here on RT confirmed with Ronnie C the producer of Facelift that the actual Rhythm tone on Facelift is a 60s Fender Bassman and NOT the Bogner Modded Marshall 4010. A goosed Bassman is the tone everyone chases on that album, NOT the Marshall. As much as I want it to be a 4010, it's not....
So let's all find a mid 60s Bassman and goose that bitch.

Seriously when you're back in town hit me up. I'll show you some shit. I used to think the same thing till I got a hold of some amazing amps. That's all I'm going to say.

I think some of the best tones I've ever heard were just a stock Super Bass into a Greenback cab. Cranked way the fuck up. Or just a JCM800 with a boost. Pretty simple shit.
