don't know if such a thing exists yet,
but ideally looking for a TRANSPARENT high gain distortion pedal that can also clean up WELL with the volume rolled down.

by transparent I mean not having a signature sound at all, enabling whatever guitar/amp combination i use to shine through except, just have enough gain to go into high gain (rock/metal-ish) when the amp's set crispy clean.

Suggestions??? thanks guys!

get in contact with lordsofchaos and have joe build you one.

Pretty much any FET based distortion pedal will do the trick. there are so many out there i don't know where to begin.

What amp type vibe are you looking for? SLO, Diezel, Mesa etc...

V-twin - tubes

Dr Boogie - solid state

Electro-Harmonix has been making a little widget called an "LPB-1" (http://www.ehx.com/products/) for about 100 years. I had several when I was a kid. They used to build them into an even smaller box that you could plug right into your guitar, because there's really nothing to them. The battery takes up the most space internally. If you're good with a soldering iron, you can make them yourself for about $10 or so. But, they used to break very easily and didn't fit every guitar, so they changed the packaging to the little die cast floor box you see here...

I think it's exactly what you're looking for. "LPB" stands for "Linear Power Booster" and all it does is make your guitar signal bigger. No tone or distortion added. It works best with tube amps, as SS amps don't overdrive well. But, if you've got a tube amp, this is the equivalent of having the hottest pickups on the planet. You can make any fiddle sing/scream honestly without all the cheesy garbage tone most distortion/overdrive pedals bring to the party. They're pretty easy on the wallet, too ($40 most places).

Is there such thing as a transparent high gain distortion pedal??

No.

Fairly transparent low/mid gain maybe.
High gain means scooping lows to keep the sound tight....transparent wouldn't work or even be desirable for high gain.

I've been using a Barber Dirty Bomb, and it's really a versatile distortion pedal. It covers a lot of ground, a three way voicing toggle, internal bass trimmer, and treble/bass controls give lots of room. For just over $100 a pretty sweet deal.

Suhr Riot.

A local store has a few of those "Metalpedals". They are really bad.

I really like this one for a mesa sound:

you can buy the pedal complete or if your soldering skills are up to snuff you can buy the kit and build it yourself.

The DIEFET posted below sounds good too but is a DIY project only.
