Looking into another band

Not to replace the band I'm in now...just something on the side to make some extra cash while this economy sucks the life out of my business. I'm actually looking into a Nickelback tribute for 3 reasons...
1. There aren't any that I've found in the whole country.
2. Chicks dig Nickelback
3. A Nickelback tribute would do well monetarily

It doesn't hurt that I actually like the band's music...just goofy, fun hard rock with plenty of hooks that get people dancing. I may have already found a singer, bassist and drummer. Putting together a short list of songs to hopefully jam soon and see if anything comes of it.

Wow, Nickelback - that probably is a good way to make some fast cash.

Nickleback?

um, good luck with your endeavor =)

it should do well...and make some decent coin. I play for cash nowadays...I played for myself for 15 years before I got into tribute bands and made no money, went into debt. Those days are over...now I get to play my guitar and actually make good money. Gonna ride that wave as long as I can.

nothing wrong with playin' for dough..that's one of the reasons I WON'T get involved in another coverband these days...bars are paying out half of what they used to when I was gigging (about two years ago) these days...and with a little one running around and the usual zombification the whole next day after leaving for the gig at seven and getting home at three or four AM, I just can't justify it...the music scene around here sucks...if it didn't suck so bad I would consider it (I still get the itch from time to time if for nothing else than to just open my amp up and play loud and proud) but it's really not worth the effort around here...at least not for new bands..some bands still do well but they've been staples in the area for years and years...has nothing to do with them being any good either..HeHeHeeheHheHEHEHEEHEHEHE

I think if you can make some coin out of it do it....but with that said, being that we share the same management company I have been told by the powers that be that doing a tribute to a band that is still around and gigging is a tough sell. personally, Im not sure if i believe it or not lol

My thing is I won't take a gig unless it guarantees each band member a certain amount after any fees/expenses. My Bon Jovi tribute has a minimum price set and we won't play unless that price is met. Thankfully we're doing pretty well as far as pay goes. We seem to be one of the higher paid bands in our region as far as tributes go. I've made some pretty good contacts that I can use for this new band too.

That makes sense but then again, Bon Jovi is still around.  Also take into consideration that a lot of people don't want to pay $100+ for tickets to see the actual bands out now...so this is a money saving alternative to that. I think with this 2nd band, we'll most likely just play around here in Rhode Island and maybe stretch it out to Mass and Connecticut sometimes. Not looking to doing any travelling with this new band. I travel enough with Bon Jersey.

I hear ya!! The thing with Bon Jovi is that they don't tour that much anymore and they have a LONG history. With all that said, i think that you should do it and see what happens!! Definitely go with yout gut ;)

And the other thing...with the agency...they've pretty much done crap for us since we started working with them so anything they may say doesn't really hold much water with me these days. They lucked out with Evolution where they don't need to actually go out and find gigs for them. Problem is that they seem to do that with all their bands...they sit back and wait for offers...which aren't coming in if nobody knows about the bands. We've started doing it more and more ourselves lately.

You're definitely lucky to have Les. Good guy and knows what he's doing. There's a chance we may be coming back to NYC this summer but on a tuesday night to play with Evolution at the China Club for the Rock Of Ages stuff.

What's it like being everything that's wrong with the music industry?

Seriously, being a tribute act (a generic miming band) of the most generic band on the radio today wouldn't kill you inside just a little bit?

not at all. Fun band that packs arenas and puts out hits...however they do it.

Tons of bands pack arenas and put out hits. I'm not even saying most pop bands are bad, but Nickelback is pretty much the definition of being musically bankrupt. Hell, it's not even like they have the nostalgia factor that Bon Jovi or any other 80s band do. That's why Bon Jovi tributes work and why a Nickelback one wouldn't.

everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Hell I'd say go for it! Sounds cool to me. Your never really gonna know the popularity of it till you try.

Go for it! I don't think it will be as successful as the Bon Jovi gig, but I think it would definately fill a niche and be worth doing. I had been trying to get my band to cover a Nickelback song as a crowd pleaser (I think I was initially pushing "Rockstar").
