Im looking for a new guitar and wanted to see what I should be looking at? With the exception of a few cheap guitars, I havent bought anything in quite a while.

I like shredder guitars, but I’m not a shredder. For years I had fun with the USA and Japanese Charvel Production models, swapping pickups and parts. I feel the current generation of mexican made guitars are great on paper but lack that quality feel when they’re in my hands. I bought an ash charvel tele off ebay, only to return it. Such a step down in quality :(

So the hunt is on for something new. I think my price range is something under $2200. But I’m
Looking for a quality premium instrument (not an import, unless its something like a high end ibanez prestige/ esp/ framus).

My main axe is an EBMM Axis. Best neck shape EVER! I’d love to get the Koa BRF Axis, but its too expensive. Played it twice and its amazing! In the same camp is the Peavey HP2. I haven’t played one, but owned 3 pv Wolfs in the past. The tops look great!

Also on the list is Suhr. I picked up a Rasmus-Suhr Guthrie Govan last year for cheap, and I’ve fallen in love. The African Mahogany is resonant and just sings. Plus the plek’d fingerboard feels far superior to many of my guitars. I’d probably be looking at a modern satin or used modern of some sort. - interestingly though, a local shop has a neckthrough suhr govan and I don’t like it.

I might see how much a custom Dean would cost. I’ve played many of their USA guitars and think they’re highly underrated as a company. They make great quality stuff! Kiesel is in my price range, but I’ve never loved their neckshapes. I had an Ultra V and DC 135 in the past. I’ve looked at PRS a little but I’m
Not in love with their necks. I think Ibanez and Ebmm JP guitars are cool- but I hate thin necks.

I tend to like thicker than average necks (ebmm Axis and Jackson pc1 are my faves) , mahogany, soft maple or a basswood body, maybe a koa top, a trem - I love the floating gotoh 510. I’d take it over a floyd any day. SS super jumbo frets. I’d prefer 24 frets but can make do with 22.

What else should I be looking at?

Can't really help on a recommendation but....Same ^^^^^ I got that Charvel 1888 MIM and while it was pretty nice it just doesn't compare.

You can pick up used Friedman calis around 2k. Wonderful guitars.

I absolutely love my ESP Eclipse. Thicker neck than my prestiges and Jacksons, more resonant than my gibsons and just chock full of kickass.

Or maybe a USA Peavey Wolfgang? I liked the ones I had. Obviously some what near your EBMM.

You could get a used ibby jcustom.

If you don't care about re-selling and plan to keep it, why not put together your own custom guitar from a place like Warmoth? If you get what you REALLY want, you will probably never sell it anyway.

Yup.
The best choice if you want another Charvel is to A. Order a custom shop, B. Order a Chubtone, or C. Find a nice clean USA from 08/09.
Not necessarily in that order.
I've played/owned some USA SD/SoCals that are every bit as good as the 2 Custom shops I've owned. I own a Plum SoCal from 09 that feels/plays like smooth silk, sounds good too...I found a Candy Tangerine SoCal from 08(early serial) that is even better, and sounds as good as any custom shop I've ever owned or picked up. I typically can't stand the Tone Zone these come with...but this guitar makes it sing. I can't believe how thick and rich the tone is...
I also know the Chubtones are killer killer guitars for any price..then when you realize that you can get one for 1600 or so?
There's your answer if you want new. Chubtone all the way.

I'll say it again, Chubtone. They do custom stuff also, woods, neck specs, SS frets, your choice of pickups and controls...you can't go wrong. $500 deposit to order, 4-6 month wait, balance due when it's ready. Super easy.

A Caparison might be what you're looking for. Great axes, I think the quality is right up there with ESPs. They sound great as well.

I’m up in boston for some business and stopped by Matt’s music. I played a Charvel dk24 with the gotoh bridge. Better quality than the rest of the mexi promods, but the neck was way too thin. Next I played a few Suhrs. Some were ok but not mind blowing. And then I was really surprised. I ended up being quite impressed with the Ibanez AZ range. Played a premium and a prestige and actually liked the premium more. Anyone own an AZ? Thoughts?

Are the dk24 necks different than the USA pro mods?

Yes. And the fit and finish is much better on the usa’s.

Ok,I'm probably going to sound like an old man...but here is my opinion.

I can play almost any neck shape. But I found my favorite. All others pale in comparison.
I have only two favorite body styles.
I have only one preferred electronics layout.

So I have a bunch of guitars that have the same feel, but in different finishes. I know what works for me.

My point (I think) is that if you found the neck you love, follow that path first.
And if you can, save up for the big dog guitar you dream of...not just another guitar.

You're not the only one. Most of my guitars have the same pickup configuration, the same pickups, and the same (modded) electronics. I know what I like, and what works for me. :dunno:
