I LOVE my dunlop rack wah, loads of cool sounds in there, might be my favorite yet
Interesting thought being a rack guy, primarily. I'l have to consider this option.

I loved the Fulltone Clyde standard that I had but didnt like the deluxe so much after that.
Why?

The Fulltone Wheels of Fire is an awesome wah...
Did you mean to state the RMC WoF?

So many wahs, so little time David...

Thanks man. I've got nothing but time, so I'm good to go.

I couldnt be happier, the tweakability is unbelievable and the Dc2-sr also has a remote volume pedal function that I like alot. Gets a wide variety of sounds..

Not sure to be honest, it wasnt as vocal for sure

Fair enough, people can suggest everything under the sun but until your ears tell you its right, nothing else really matters.. have fun!!

Not bad, I found your clip on their site:

What WAH version and options did you have on the Area 51?

I got all the mods. The clip is everything at its STOCK setting.

One pet-peeve that I have always had about typical Wah pedals is the lack of clarity and transitions when in the hi-gain arena.

How do the Area 51 and RMC Wahs hold up in this senario?

TEESE WOF wah 1:45 in.
A vicious wah-

Nice! Now that's getting to where I am looking for. It doesn't turn into a flapper pedal in hi-gain.

carlygtr56":1ttwaqp1 said:
Just a heads-up. Every Teese wah I owned, and I owned several, hums like a banshee when using it before your distortion.
Carl, I only use the gain from my Herbert and nothing else is on the floor. The only device I have on the floor is my FCB1010 with two expression pedals (one for volume control and the other for rate control) controlling my Herbert and midi-thru to my G-Force. No distortion pedals and whatnot. Did you experience the above issue with the TEESE WOF?

Nice! The intro is very good.

Thanks man.

I don't really notice any added noise with my was in the signal chain. Even when it's on, there's very little added to it, unless the boost is on, of course. Even still, it's pretty quiet. Maybe I have a gem, but I bought it new 3 1/2 years ago.

I totally understand about the purity going into the Herbert :D

...its the kind of thing that if your playing, you wont hear it. If you stop and the wah is ON, you'll hear it. The last Teese wah I had was the WOF and it was ok in this regard.

Thanks guys for all the info. It really narrowed it down for me rather quickly and that’s why this board can be very useful.

I spoke with Dan at Area 51, and I was impressed with his knowledge and willingness to pretty much go over his philosophy on building the ~perfect WAH from the get-go.

Looks like a winner with the 5 position selector, the quack control, the growl control and the side mounted LED.

I also spoke with Geoffrey (the brains at RMC) and again I was impressed with his knowledge and willingness to pretty much go over his philosophy on building his WAH pedals. Geoffrey said that from what I have noted to be some of my concerns about hum and buzz and losing vocality in a hi-gain setting, Geoffrey said that he has addressed all these issues and much more and is always making minor changes to improve on his products. Geoffrey ultimately suggested the Picture WAH or the WoF.

After a fair amount of discussion with both manufacturers, I am kind of torn between the two.

Tough call. They both kick ass.
the WOF has a sweep all its own. Very vocal and dramatic.

The Area 51 has a great sweep and can do more effects at different points in its range.

The only down side I can foresee about the Area 51 is the longer wait time of 4-6 weeks.
I just spoke with Noel at Tone Merchants (about 80 miles from me) and he's got in stock:

I've currently got the old original Dunlop Cry Baby (not very impressive, IMO) and the Morley Bad Horsie (I like the optical switch, but that's about it.)

I was looking at the Fulltone Clyde Standard or Clyde Deluxe. Also, a buddy of mine said that he really liked the RMC1-6.

Anyone got the scoop on either of these WAH pedals - pros/cons...etc? Or any suggestions on a better selection?

- David

I've owned the RMC3 (sadly bit the dust in a flood) and currently own a Fulltone Clyde Standard. I really, really like the Clyde. It has a huge, deep bottom and a sweet top (not harsh and thin like the Dunlops I've played). Probably the most transparent when engaged wah I've ever played. Very vocal and expressive. If I had to choose between the RMC3 I had and the Clyde, I'd probably take the latter. Not as adjustable, but the sound and range it does is excellent.

Bummer...

How is the Clyde in the hi-gain territory - does it still maintain its clairity and vocality?

Very good. Listen to any of the live Trower stuff

Dude are you shitting? I got RTs live stuff tatooed to my ass.

My absolute favorite RT live album is
robin_t_6.jpg
- Robin Trower Live 1975 Stockholm, Sweden. RT smokes on that gig.

But I don't think that FT was his WAH at the time. ;)

What WAH are you packing at this time?

Hmm... I was sure I replied to a post about wahs by SgtThump here a few days ago, but I must have forgotten to Submit after Preview.

I've got a Teese RMC2 and a Crybaby. The Teese is very round and full sounding, while the Crybaby is nastier and cuts better. I think most people would prefer the Teese, but I play black/death/heavy metal and surprisingly the Crybaby matches often better.

The Teese is clearly built better and sounds quite clean (noisewise). The Crybaby's pot cracks and needs replacing every few months – I don't even bother anymore.

Teese has great customer service – he replies emails himself pretty much immediately.

I'd be interested in trying one of those optical wahs, if their sound can be compared to more vintage wahs.

I'd say so. I use it mostly for high-gain leads, though it does the clean funk-thing exceptionally well.

I just got back from my local GC here. They had two Fulltone Clyde Deluxe and one Fulltone Clyde Standard WAHs in stock. So I dashed out with my trusty Roman in hand.

The FT Deluxe – bleh. Too much fidgeting. Even the sales guy (guitarist) said that most folks end up just using the Hendrix setting.

The standard was completely different. It does have a very nice feel and tone to it. It definitely has a nice true-bypass as the tone stayed clean and clear, on or off. I played through a Herbert they had there into a Diezel 4x12 V30 loaded. Man how those fully loaded V30 4x12 cabs are so shrill by themselves. I had the treble at 9:00 and presence at 12:00 to try and tame them. Makes me realize how awesome and fine tuned my rig is in comparison. Mine is much more dynamic, warm and flexible with my speaker config.

Anyways, the FT-S was nice on all channels, but it did lose a good majority of its musical vocality above the 13-14th fret with Herbert's CH3's gain at ~1:00. But all said and done I think that I am leaning towards a RMC Picture, Wizard or WoF WAH.

Also, I ran into a pretty awesome session player while I was there and he heard me banging on the FT-S in the loud room. He jammed a bit too and was very good. He mentioned that the FT WAHs are nice but he uses exclusively (and he claimed to have played them all) a WAH made by Mike McConnihie. His website is http://www.mccon-o-wah.com. So that's another contact to bug before I make a purchase.

I’m headed to Tone Merchants this Saturday to try out all the RMC stuff. Noel said he had just got a large RMC shipment in today and he hadn’t updated his website yet.

Lots of fun coming up – stay tuned for coming attractions.
