looking to put actives in my Ibanez EMGs, or Blackouts??

I have an RGA121 as my number 1 guitar. I want to switch to actives since I really like the EMG 85 I have in my V. My V is a very bright guitar (alder body, maple neck, ebony board) the 85 is nice and fat but still very clear. I have heard some good things about the blackouts, and I am looking at the AHB-1 set. I play mostly hard rock.

Anyone have experience with both??!!??

If you dig the 85, then roll with it. Active pickups tend to do away with the core tone of a particular wood. You get the preamp voicing that EMG wants you to have. I don't mean that in a bad way. It's just how it is. :)

Well I just found the blackout set for $160 shipped to Canada. I jumped on it. This should make my ibanez scream!!!!

Blackouts suck. I had them for about a year and tried to force myself to like them, but I eventually just gave up and threw an 81/85 set in the guitar and I couldn't be happier.

I am hoping that I will like them, but for the price if I don't I will just sell them, and take a loss. Did you have the AHB-1 set??

Yeah. I found them more muddy and lacking the bite that the EMG's have. EMG's just have more "chunk" to them when you do palm mutes and the low end is much more tight. The cleans on the Blackouts was better though, but IMO, that's about it. You might like them. Some people like them more. I play mostly metal though and IMO nothing beats the EMG 81 for metal.

"I found them..."

So you tried all 5 models in the bridge spot?

Yeah...didn't think so. You probably tried the AHB-1b...and found it muddy. But don't generalize over all the other models. All the BO's are interchangeable between bridge/neck...just like the EMGs...and all have their own flavors...just like EMGs. Would you out a EMG60 in the bridge...not like it...then say all EMGs suck?

The AHB-1n in the bridge kills. And Samhill on here has posted razor sharp chunkie vids with the AHB-3 EMTY set. And you can swap the neck into the bridge with the EMTY's (like I did) and it slays. Not many people have experience with the AHB-2 BO...but it also is a monster.

Who uses a 60 in the bridge?!??! And yes, I tried swapping them and it sounded IMO worse. YOU may like them, but everyone has different tastes and there's a reason why the 81 is THE standard metal bridge pickup.

Oh, and FYI the latest guy you've tried to rip off, dreamspace from HCAF is looking for you. He wants his guitar that he paid you for over 10 weeks ago:

Hey asshole. You took a dude's money and did not ship his guitar. That is lower than low. You will (and are in the process of) being tracked all over the internet. There is not one musician's website that you will not be tracked down to and reminded of your douchebaggery and cuntliness....until you either ship that guy's guitar or refund his money.

Be a man. Not a cunt.

Man up and send the guy what he PAYED for Frank Patrick McCoy. We know that you were trying to sell the same guitar to someone else on another site. Where you gonna rip that person off too? All of your and your families personal information has been spread to all of the forums. You cant hide behind a different screen name. The only thing left for you to do is man up and correct the situation. If there is more to the story you need to state your case because your reputation is on the line.

It's been 4 months, Why is it so hard to ship the Guitar???

So your planning on just keeping the Money and never sending the Guitar?

I've been rocking a set of Mick Thompson Blackouts for about a year and couldn't be happier with them.

This guy is going to get his, you can't hide on the internet when all your personal info is out there. Enjoy the imminent karmic bitch slap coming your way, douchebag.

I have the Blackouts in a basswood body RG and they sound killer. Tried them in a mahogany bodied V and I didn't like them in that guitar...felt like they lacked in definition so I prefer EMG's in Magogany guitars. Blackouts sound good to me tho in the basswood for sure.

Maybe that's it. The guitar I tried them in is a mahogany one. They definitely sounded a lot more muddy than EMG's.

I'd also like to mention once agina what a douche Mustaine-who? is

well what did you play them through? lol
i have a set of AHB-1 blackouts in my black ltd DV8-R and i think they pretty much KICK ASS! they're versatile too - they clean up nicely when rolling the volume back on the guitar, but have a great powerfull bite and full chunk when turned up.
i play pretty much plugged straight in most of the time into a modded TSL 60 into a 1960AV 4x12.

I prefer EMG over any other active PuPs..I am a big fan of the 89 and 85 in most guiters and don't tend to care for the 81.however I recently aquired an 87 soloist in a trade with an 81 in the bridge and it sound just awsome with my nitro...

I have had EMG's for years and got the AHB-1 set a few months ago. I think they sound pretty good. I don't think they are as night and day as people make them out to be. They are kind of similar to the 85 in the bridge, but maybe not quite as tight on the low end, and not as crisp on the top. I think they have more output also. But, come on, they are probably 80% similar. I find my guitar, pedals, and amp make 95% of the sound. The pickups just add that tiny bit to the sound.

They are not as razor tight, but they are not supposed to be... but, its not like they are sludgy and undefined.
