looking to put actives in my Ibanez EMGs, or Blackouts??

I hated the AHB-1 but love my 81 but if you havent tried the AHB-3 you should way better than the other blackouts very tight sounding kind of a cross between a 81/85 great pickup like it as much as the 81..

My RGA121 is a bit bright, and that is why I wanted to stay away from an 81, and I have another guitar with an 85 in the bridge. So I wanted them to be different. Hopefully it works good!!!

If you like the 85 in the bridge, you will probably like them as I also hated the 85 in the bridge and found the Blackouts sounded similar to that. I just much prefer the crisp, tight low end that the 81 has and the nice compression that it gets with palm mutes.

I think in a darker sounding guitar an 81 in the bridge would sound great, but with a bright guitar I think it is a bit too much.

I find that is all about balance. It is like using a darker sounding cab to tame an overly bright amp. You just have to find the right match. I am hoping that is what I will get with the blackouts. I currently have some very dark fat sounding WCR Ironman pups, and they just don't seem to have enough clarity to me. That is why I am going active.

Yeah. I found them more muddy and lacking the bite that the EMG's have. EMG's just have more "chunk" to them when you do palm mutes and the low end is much more tight. The cleans on the Blackouts was better though, but IMO, that's about it. You might like them. Some people like them more. I play mostly metal though and IMO nothing beats the EMG 81 for metal.

Yeah...didn't think so. You probably tried the AHB-1b...and found it muddy. But don't generalize over all the other models. All the BO's are interchangeable between bridge/neck...just like the EMGs...and all have their own flavors...just like EMGs. Would you out a EMG60 in the bridge...not like it...then say all EMGs suck?

I have tried several blackouts, even the EMTY set, but I always came back to EMG's. The blackouts are way too dominant for my taste. They have very high output, are a bit bassy and can get muddy (depending on your rig) in my perception. Check out the new EMG-x series, or even the James Hetfield ones. Good thing about actives is that you can swap between EMG and SD easily.
