It's not that I don't like the pickup, but I'd love if I could find something with a deeper low end and more clarity throughout.

BKP Black Dog or Duncan Distortion?

It's for a EBMM 25th Anniversary.

Yea? I don't know much about that pickup. What're the specs? clips?

There are some clips out on You Tube. You really cannot tell the sound of pickups from clips unless different pickups are A/B in the same guitar using the same amp/settings. There is plenty of info here on RT. Just search the Rig Talk Forum.

Per Jerry from Luxxtone

The Afwayu is just gigantic sounding, mean, with huge low mids and low end. It's around 16k, A5 magnet and just sounds like a wall of sound. It's pretty dark, so it doesn't work well in dark guitars. But it shines in brighter guitars for big low end with a nice dry attack and surprisingly less compressed than you would think.

I went from playing a Aldrich for a couple years to a Duncan JB. The JB was alot meaner and a bit darker. Love it.

I had the exact same problem with the Aldrich in one of my guitars... and personally, it was the Dimarzio ToneZone that solved the problem for me.

Big chunky low end, great clarity and it tracks even the most crazy fast playing without getting loose/un-defined in the slightest (if it could keep up with Paul Gilbert, then it's hardly gonna have any problem with me LOL).

Even though it's a fat sounding pickup, it still has plenty of bite in the upper mids. So it won't sound overly dark/modern at all.

I also had the same problem with the Aldrich in a Hamer Diablo. Replaced the set with a Tone Zone and Liquifier. Love the Tone Zone in this guitar!!!

I also tried the Aldrich in my Jackson PC-1. It did sound better in the mahogany bodied PC-1 but still lacked low end. Replaced it with a DiMarzio 36th ann PAF and it sounds sounds great in this guitar...

The MCP Garuda is also another great substitute for the Aldrich or a JB.

No love for the DD or Black Dog eh?

No clue about the Black Dog, but the DD most likely won't deliver what you're looking for. If you want something from the Duncan line, check out the Alt 8 or Custom Custom instead. One of those should give you what you're looking for.

The Aldrich......lack of clarity and low end. Wow.

It must be the guitars....

It's got enough low end, but the low end just isn't as DEEP as I would like. The clarity issue might be the fact that they are covered pickups....I'm not sure. My Carvin CT-6 with a Duncan Distortion sounds massive.

this thread is quite confusing to me
the aldrich is known to be VERY bassy
the black dog and duncan distortion are completely different pickups from the aldrich and from each other
the dog is a medium low output thick sounding pup due to its overall midrange bump, but it does NOT have a deep low end
and neither does the duncan distortion, which is also a midrange based pup

the afwayu is indeed a quite hot and bass heavy pup and might work for you, but I don't rear much of a voicing difference from the aldrich, except for the extra clarity/rawness that's part of the motor city pups sound
the tone zone is very bassy as well, but has a much more nasal and very compressed tone

MCP Afwayu!!

This is the correct answer.

Yep, I have a special wound one coming anyday now. For some reason, every pickup I put into my Charvel Pointy 2005 reissue has been bright as hell!!
