Loosening up a volume knob..

You can adjust how tight or loose the screw is to make it easier or harder to turn. I do it all the time.

Well that's another part of the equasion because there are different pots. There are the pots where the shaft is split where tightening it or loosening it will affect how tight it feels. Then you have the pots where the shafts are solid where tightening the screw wont do anything.

AND there are knobs that don't have screws. BTW, where do you get your badass 500k pots that turn easily? Pots that turn hard piss me off so much.

I used to get them at 48st custom guitars (ESP dealer)

I don't do any of my own work anymore, so Im at a loss as to what's good anymore! With that said, its been years since Ive had to replace a pot lol

Okay, I'm confused again. The split vs. solid shaft doesn't really affect how hard it is to turn the pot, does it? I don't see how it could?

I had one that was hard, worked it for an hour while watching tv and it loosened up some.

I have to say that if you take this line out of the context of this thread, it is quite funny...

What was on TV when you were "working it"? Cinemax After Dark??

Clean it with a shot of deoxit or tv tuner cleaner, either of which can be purchased at your local radio shack. deoxit is crazy expensive for how big the cans are, but the shit works better than anything. Shoot a little cleaner in there and work yer knob back and forth full on to full off, and sometimes go from say midway to full off or on and then back and forth, because it's easier to do that than full rotation (hope that makes sense).

The cleaner will cut down on the friction considerably. there's an 'arm' in the pot called a wiper, it is pushed against a carbon track on the pot and is the source of how much friction a pot has. Get some cleaner in there, and the contact is still made but it's slippery/lubricated.

You are right to be confused lol! I just checked one of my guitars and The split shaft works the same way as I was talking with it hitting the wood and it has nothing to do with the tightening like I though lol! So at least you know I went home during lunch and tried it because even I was a bit confused
