First time in 35yrs of gigging. Please tell me it’s probably just a tube

Probably, I remember a similar situation with a Vintage Modern during a gig....swapped preamp tubes and problem solved.

You can't use the same tubes for 35 years :scared:

Hope it's just a tube. Always the first thing to look at.

Man I’m hoping it’s just that, won’t get to the studio to tube swap for a couple days unfortunately, I love the amp so I’m stressing.

A little better description would help

Amp lost roughly half the volume and all the gain. I dropped it to half power bit still same weak output. Finished the gig with amp dimed/ looped eq cranked and od pedal and our soundman doing the same for my signal. Basically the amp sounded like I was on the clean channel with the volume on 1-2.

LOL!

^ I think he was saying that was the first time in 35 years that he's had an amp go out on him. At least that's how I read it. Maybe you were joking also. The 2555x has been out just a little over 20 years and I'm sure there are some very old amps out there still running on their original tubes.

billboogie - what you need to do is buy a matched 'quad' of EL34 power tubes and a couple of 12AX7 preamp tubes from a reputable dealer. I am assuming that when you say loss of output, the amp no longer has the volume it used to?

dougstubes, tubedepot, thetubestore, eurotubes and the like. Tell them what amp you have exactly and tell them that one of the 12AX7s is for the Phase Inverter slot (last slot before the power tubes-V3 probably). Get some electrical contact cleaner while you are at at. When you get the tubes spray a little contact cleaner on the tube pins and work the tube in and out to lubricate and clean the sockets.

If you still have an output problem after that, report back.

Try replacing your phase inverter tube first.

Of course I was kidding.

When the VM had an output drop at a club years back, I remember looking at V1 and it was very dim, not as bright...I changed that tube on set break and it worked fine...but to be safe I changed all pre tubes. I'd bet it's a pre tube since it's exactly the same scenario as mine was. If it's the original tubes in the 2555x then you're dealing with new production crap. That's why I always change tubes out on any newer amp, unless they are already vintage. I don't trust the newer tubes.

first plug the guitar into the effects return. if you get good sound, your powertubes are fine. if not replace.

probably just a tube.

So what are the best tubes for the 2555x? I still have whatever came in mine and it sounds great, no issues. But I know you can experiment with a lot of different types in this amp. I've liked KT77s in other amps, anyone try them in a Jube?

Dude, you can run ANY 2 octal pairs or quads in that amp...I had 2 6L6s with 34s, 2KT88s with 2 6550s, 2 KT90s with EL34s....it was experimental heaven.

That's right.. I think you and I talked about this before I bought mine but I forgot.

Might try a pair of 77s along with a pair of old Tung-Sol 34s I have laying around.

It’s such a cool feature..you can go from warm 80s Marshall thing to a scooped modern Marshall thing with crushing tight low end..at least for a Marshall..with different tube/boost pedal combos....
