I'm lame. I've never tried one. (too many years with MTS modules and modelers)

Not to hijack the thread, but what version is the most desirable? I see the term "block letter" used a lot.

I believe the block letter, signature, and 6505 are all supposed to be the exact same amp apart from shipping with different tubes. The block letter I had sounded pretty much identical to the signature the other guitar player in the I was in has.

Mine as well.

I don't use my blockletter much these days. I use the 5150 III all the time now but for the 17 years I did use it my band went through two rhythm guitar players and each one bought 5150's once they got in the band after hearing mine. Each guy got the signature series. Neither one sounded as good as the blockletter I bought when they first came out. Everyone in the band agreed there was a difference in the sound. I used mine with the 5150 cab and they used a Marshall cab. But who knows. They say they're alll the same amps.

I would definitely say thats a result of the cabs...I did not like the thin sound I got from the marshall cab I tried, but through the 6505 cab....it rules.

How about through a Marshall cab loaded with Greenbacks? I've heard that the 5150/6505 cab speakers were designed to sound like distressed Greenbacks. I'm really curious about this because to this day I haven't heard the 6505+ through a cab that I thought it sounded great with, but I've never tried one through a Greenback cab or the 5150/6505 cab. I've tried a 5150 III through the 5150 III cab though and it sounded killer.

That's right, the Peavey speakers are built to sound like Greenbacks, Eddie's choice of speaker through the years.

The circuitry is all the same throughout the almost 20 years the 5150 has been around, however there's debate to whether the same transformers etc were used throughout, some say yes, some say no. Pesronally I think it's unlikely that Peavey were using the same, outsourced parts throughout the 5150s life span.

They have had a number of different tubes shipped with them over the years, stick say... TAD or =C= in three heads (Block, Sig and 6505) and blind test them, I doubt you'd be able to tell.

Peavey says its purely cosmetic differences between the 3. :dunno:

I think though, even 2 identicle amps together will sound different from each other. I once had 2 rev G rectos at the same time. Less than 600 apart from each other on the SN#. They had their differences.

This amp hangs with the DIEZELS........and all the other "boutique" amps out there.........

I owned them all...........and this is one BAD MUTHA FN AMP!!

I don't agree at all.

I think the distorted tones of the 5150 are great, but its a one trick pony no offense, but the clean and crunch are lacking to say the least. It can't touch a Diezel in construction, versatility, sound quality and definition...

I have a 5150 and 5152. Love them both but prefer the 5152.
haven't played them for awhile as I have the cali hooked up most of the time.

The 5150 has a rhythm channel and a lead channel. Doesn't really have a clean channel dude. They're built extremely way and are very reliable (Mine's broken down once)

It's not a one trick pony, how many applications have you used it for?

No offense taken.
Never said it was better then the Diezels....but it hangs with them.
At least for what I play. Metal and Rock.
I owned both the VH4 and Herbert and the 5150 can HANG! :D

But i think there is also a tone/cost/reliability factor involved here.
For what the Diezel costs, it should sound, feel better than the 5150 no ?

I love the 5150 tone, its my favourite hi gain tone and the fact that it comes at such a great price adds to its bang for the buck.

So anyone have any workarounds to make the clean better ?
