Love the Scumback 100W M75. Budget alternatives?

So I've got a pair of custom 112 cabinets in my basement rehearsal space. Got tired of lugging the 212 cabs up and down the stairs, so I bought some nice oversize 112's to keep at the studio, permanently, for the convenience factor.

They're currently loaded with K100s. I'm just growing tired of the K100's. They're articulate as hell, but almost too "steely" sounding. A little too abrasive on top.

I have a Bogner 112 ported cab that has a Scumback 100W M75 in it, and I LOVE that speaker. Sounds freakin' amazing. But being that these are rehearsal-space practice cabs, and not my MAIN cabs, I don't necessarily want to drop $175 per speaker on them.

Are there any other 100+ Watt speakers out there that sound big and fat, relatively british sounding, and not metallic? How's that Lynch Super V?

how about a weber equivalent to the speaker you love? it may not have the "extra mojo" but I bet it would be pretty close since they make them after all.
I was at the Weber site looking to order a higher powered H30. When you select a G or H type speaker, you can't select wattage...you're stuck with a low wattage speaker.

I think you probably have to go to the My Tone Custom section, then just put in the same specs for what you want,........then it will have a power option I believe.

Not a bad way to go.

Not a bad idea at all...

Woah! You have to have a PHD in speakers to understand all that stuff.

I have not heard a M75 in person but I do have a Super V. Compared to a E80 and ET65, the Super V is brighter and crunchier. I have it in an Egnater 1X12 but almost always use it combined with the TM2X12 running the other two speakers.

Just copy the specs from the regular say 1225 product, then plug those same one's in the custom option.

I see.

I just ordered the standard H30 30 watt with pre rola dope as test.
Right now my 20 watt Polaris 1x12 closed-back combo has a Celestion Anniversary H30 in it, I'm gonna swap with the Weber and compare.

I am going to recant a little bit on this. I just did some closer A/B'ing on these and the Super V is crunchier but also deeper. It seems to have more lower mids too. More like a grrrrrrr as opposed to a wahhhhh if that makes any sense.

I've got a 100w h55 for sale if ur interested. Less then 170. I love scums.

Weber high wattage Silver Bell. I liked it much better than the Scumback H75 I had.

how do the webers compare to the celestion, emi and wgs equivilents?

You know Nick, before Ted passed, he mentioned this one to me for a 112 for the style of music we like to play. Just might be the ticket.

Man, if Jim from Scumback ever caught wind of this thread, he'd murder me!   I'm basically saying that I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. :D

Buckeye - interesting... as long as the Silver Bell is closer to the "M" series, than the "H" series, that might be great for my two practice 112 cabs.

(Of course, if a 100W M75 happens to pop up somewhere, I'll just grab one of those.)

It has a Greenback "m" flavor.

And you think I haven't been watching... :gethim: LOL

If you look at the Silver Bell, it's a 40 oz magnet, so more magnet than the M75, but less than the H75. It's also going to wind up somewhere in between on tone characteristics. Nothing wrong with it. I've already done custom speakers for a well known player with the 40 oz mag, but with the 75 hz cone & large dust cap. He's got other speaker company affiliations, so I'm not revealing his name....sorry.

Since I'm basically recreating the old Greenback G12M and G12H's with my M75 and H75, going with this magnet type wasn't what I focused on. While my Scumnico uses a 40 oz Alnico magnet with a neodymium tip (to bump up the alnico mag's power a bit), it's more like a 43-44 oz magnet for power, right in between the M75 and H75, but with the unique alnico midrange.

But I'll tell you what Ted said to me when I asked him how he felt when people bought Scumbacks after buying his, and then put the Webers up for sale...

"Jim, I'm not bothered in the least, you know why? I sold 8 speakers, not just four." Meaning he sold 4 of the Webers then sold four more to me to replace the ones he sold previously.

Ted was pretty practical as a businessman, as you can tell. So try them out if you want to.

That was a total class response in my opinion. I tip my hat to you sir. I can't wait until I become employed again and can order up a M75 and H75.

Hey Nick. I've got a Blue Dog and a Silver Bell for sale, both of which came from aeroic who bought them new. Both are 8ohm, 75watt. I'd sell 'em both for $120 shipped.

Jim's always been a class guy when it comes to stuff like this. Even if you buy used scummies, he will always help you out. That's one of the reasons why my cabs all have scums in them now......oh, and maybe the tone a little bit!! Really his plan is genius.........gets you hooked no matter what!!
