Low volume solution

I've been getting up at 4:30 AM to get some playing in before starting my day and need a low cost solution so I can learn tunes at low volume without having to do it acoustically. A modeler is fine.

My interface and monitoring setup is usually off and I don't want to hassle opening Logic and using my full rig.

What's out there that I could use at low volumes for this. I'm talking really low volume in fact, it's low enough that the mini Marshall I bought for this task sounds lousy because it's too low.

I don't mind running through my Mac, just not through full monitoring setup. I would need a solution where I could plug into the Mac and just out the little computer speaker setup.

Any ideas?

I use a Line6 HD300 and a good set of headphones for that.

Apogee Jam. Through your Mac with the free version of Amplitube (pick and choose a couple amp models to buy if you wish.) Or through your iPad with Amplitube, Ampkit or one of the other modeller apps.

They all let you load tracks for practicing, slowing down, etc. You can use headphones or your comp speakers.

Apogee Jam with Amp Kit+ on your iPad with a good set of headphones.

That's two for Apogee Jam, and I do have good headphones... All the music is on my iPad, I'm liking the sound of this.

Thanks for all the input guys.

That would be awesome!

So how would I play along with tunes? Would they have to be imported into GarageBand or Amplitube?

On the mac you would just fire up itunes and play a track. On your ipad/iphone, most if not all the modeller apps will play the tunes you have available on the device, and slow them down and adjust pitch too. Freaking awesome.

Cool... Maybe I could learn Schon's solo on Any Way You Want It if I could slow it down. Some of the fast parts are eluding me. I tapped out and moved on to Vivian Campbell (Holy Diver).

Look at the Boss JS-10 or the Yamaha THR series amps.

I have an AXE FX 2 rig and just picked up a Boss JS-10 and it rocks. JS-10 has built in songs to play along with that are real good and not cheesy. I like the fact that it has 2 inputs so my young daughter and I can jam together without having to fire up my main rig. Very simple to us and has tons and tons of functions.

I can basically cop my main Friedman BE patch from my Axe 2 on the Boss JS-10. Plug the JS-10 into my studio monitors and this little practice amp turns into a beast.

I am looking at the Yamaha THR series of amps also. Love all the videos of the THR10X metal amp, especially the one with Satchel from Steel Panther. Awesome tone!

Yamaha THR10 is awesome. I think it could be what you are looking for.

Is the latency better on the iPad apps? I tried a year or so ago and it was awful. I was using Amplitube and Ampkit.

THR10 looks great, just not as low cost as I'm seeking.

That. No noise, surprisingly good results in front of the "lower end" modelers (= not FAS/Kemper), inexpensive.

I use a POD with headphones... The pod is plugged into my computer, All the tracks are in either iTunes or Transcribe!, Plug headphones into computer speakers and play silently...

Do you have an attenuator Bob? You can always look at slaving into another amp or taking the line out into the mixer board, then using headphones.

Nope, no attenuator and I'm not wanting to use a tube amp. We're talking 4:30 AM low volume here... others are sleeping in the house, one across the hallway from my music room.

I'm thinking the Apogee is where I'm going. Low cost compared to most solutions and I can use it with the iPad which is a bonus.
