Hello all,
I had a set of Dream 90 Humbucker sized P90s in another guita of mine, but am going with humbuckers in it instead.
I got the set cheap with some parts at my local shop. They were brand new and I got a great deal on all of the bundle so I took a shot.
The neck pickup sounds really good, the bridge isn't bad, it is very balanced, but I seek a bit more of a 'kick' when I switch to the bridge position.
I have a LP studio+ with the 490R/498T combination. There is almost no way to balance the two pickups out together, so i have been using neck primarily for cleans and slight drive and then bridge for anything with crunch to high gain but never for cleans.
Last night I got a wild idea and swapped in a GFS Dream 90 in the neck.
So far, I can actually balance the amp settings in a way that seems to suit both pickups for clean and lead.
They have not been in long, so a lot of testing to do but this seems to work really work in the LP.
The bass is controlled and thick but still solid, snappy and present mids, and a present, clear high-end.
The bridge seems to just sweep it to the upper mid end of the spectrum instead of changin the entire tonal profile of the guitar, which is good.
Really shocked at how well these two seem to be pairing together. It definitely is a vintage/classic sound but has bite and punch - absolutely rips through heavy gain and Marshalls.
If you have an LP with this combo and you find the neck too fat and muddy for the bridge, try out a humbucker sized P90 and see if balances out better for you.
In the case of the Dream 90, the neck pickup is around $40 with shipping, cheap enough to give it a try.
Again, the dream 90 is a surprisingly good neck pickup!
Does it look crazy? Yes but I'm kinda into that right now at this point I'm my life.
