im betting its wiring, a burned out pot or some other technical issue.

'Just to be clear, the guitar doesn't sound like it has a technical issue. It just doesn't sound as lively as I'd like. I'm comparing it to my other LP which sounds great even with the stock pups. Also, it's not like it sounds like total crap...it just sounds like it could stand to be opened up a little.
Bottom line is that I would guess you simply got a "bad one". I've repeated as nauseum over the years that Les Pauls need to be played and scrutinized in order to get a good one. Gibson puts out far too many duds. A great one can be an inspiring instrument while others can sound dull and lifeless regardless of what you do to them. I hope for your sake that you're able to solve the problem, but with what you mentioned that you've already done, I'm betting that you won't.

If it's not the pots, caps, or wiring, I'd suggest trying the Tremonti Treble. High output, good clarity, sweet tone. If it still sounds dead, the guitar is probably a dud...

I'll have to do some research to find out what the stock pups are in the guitar I like. Having said that, the guitars are totally different from each other. Funny, the one I love has a 50's neck and is chambered. The one that isn't quite up to snuff has a 60's neck and is way heavier than the other. The 60's neck guitar plays great and sounds good unplugged. I've played it through several amps, MESA MKIV, 5150 III, JSX, 101b and my Lonestar. It sounds "ok" in all of those amps but not as open as my other LP and not as open as I'd like.

I may just try a few more pups and "see" what I hear.
