LP Studio vs Standard or Custom

Although my LP classic white Studio is only a year old I was thinking of upgrading to a Standard or maybe a custom. I know the finishes are much nicer and detailed but will I notice a difference in tone or weight? Also, which is the most comfortable of the necks available to have for shorter hands and fingers like mine?

well Customs get all the love around here. I even heard Standards being referred to as "honky" which I havent found myself. Typically, your customs are gonna weigh the most. Generally in the 10lb range. They typically have thicker rounder necks. Having said that, '58 Standards have huge necks. I bought a R0 (1960 reissue) which has the thin neck - like a classic. Felt best for me but I am playing mostly Charvels so most necks feel fat to me!. And would be my recommendation for someone with short hands and fingers.
 
Bottom line with Les Pauls is you HAVE to play them before you buy one, then make your decison.

I heard the historics have better cuts of wood than the customs, don't (some) customs have a short neck tenon as well?

I've heard the same thing about the wood quality...but I'm not sure how true it is. The Customs have had the long neck tenon since they've been made in Gibson's "Custom Shop" (which has been for only 2-3 or so years now). All other custom's from the 80's and 90's have the short Tenon. I'm not sure about the early 70's LPs though...
 
Now about the pickups..........what's the difference in the pickups that come with a LP Custom as opposed to the LP Studio? And when I'm reading about the 50's and 60's necks which one would be the better choice for shorter hands?

+1000000000 I have played soo many shitty Les Pauls out there it's not funny. A lot of people think just because they're getting a Les Paul they're going to get THAT sound.....nope. PLenty of them are tone dead. Gibson knows all too well that people often don't judge with their ears, they could care less what they throw out of their factory as long as it's going to sell and make them money.

And be careful out there. According to Gibson, PRS is trying to confuse you into buying one of their guitars! :lol: :LOL:

The Custom Shop models "seem" pretty consistently kick ass. And like Danyeo said, please dont let yourself be tricked into buying a PRS! Those toneless guitars look good (which is apparently the highest priority for many), but they don't have anywhere near the tone of a LP. At least comparing the PRSs and LPs I've played in my life.

The PRS's are just like the LP's as far as inconsistancy goes. But with PRS, it's the tone that's the inconsistancy. They all play great IMO.
 
Whos to say, you may actually end up preferring your Studio to the other LP's you try. Its kinda hard to generalize really. I had 2 Studios, and the 2nd one I had I would put up against many of the Gibson LP CS from a tone and build point of view. I've seen some crazy finish issues on some Gibson CS guitars, and plenty have not sounded that great.

There is Joe's Guitars here in Wallingford, CT. that has a $3300 Lp "custom shop" :lol: :LOL: that has ORANGE PEEL on the entire top of the guitar!!!!!! Mentioned the name if anyone doubts this, call and ask for pics as you are interested.........................

Ah the plight of the name..............do you throw the dice with a LP "custom shop" :lol: :LOL: for tone but the fit and finish sucks or do you get the better built PRS that may sound thin????

ive never played an LP ive liked.. ever..

and ive never had the chance to play a real charvel ='(

but i have played on a $20,000 strat SRV. god o mighty, was like 13's or 16's on it. was blues heaven though. but definately not worth 20 grand lol.

i love my ibanez. as many of you know what i mean by this - its my cheater stick :yes:

I was joking about the the confusing thing, just making fun of Gibson with their lawsuits. But yes, PRS guitars are inconsistent in tone. Some sound great some are just dead. But i played a SC245 that to me, sounded as good as any Les Paul i have heard or played. And i remember me and Ivan were in GC one day playing the PRS Custom 24's and there was one that was CLEARLY better sounding in terms of output, bottom end, and just plain balls.

But what does "sound good" actually mean? What if your idea of sounding good is out of phase or coil tapped tones. How do LP's sound for that style? What if i wanted a clear lead tone for fusion without an overabundance of midrange or bottom end. Would i want a LP for that?
I have heard one too many world class players get incredible tones from PRS guitars that i chuckle when people trash them. But with PRS, Gibson, and any other company, you have to play before you pay. Wood doesn't always sound like how it's supposed to.
