LUKE

Still nobody's identified what my Luke is.

Posted it several times in various threads over the years, challenging anyone to tell me which model it is, but still no takers.

Just for the heck of it, here 'tis again:

These were taken by my ex-popstar buddy in Denmark (formerly from the UK), before he mailed it out to me. I say this 'cause I don't want anyone to think I have some sort of decent studio.

That looks like a Luke II based on the fact it has the Music Man 2 point tremolo, locking tuners, and EMG pickups (with the more modern EMG logo). The luke 1 would have had the EMG pickups (with the older logo) but with a floyd and locking nut, vs locking tuners. The Luke 3 would have had the same tremolo, but with Dimarzio Transition pickups, and the luke 4 would have had the EBMM pickups.

That looks to be an original LUKE #1 [1st version].
Close-ish.

Please play again Brother Danno.

Correct weight brother. We're halfway-there now...

Not just any Luke II 'though of course; the roasted-maple neck, SS frets and ability to see the body's wood make it "unique".

I love the look of wood and had therefore always hoped that there'd be a Luke that wasn't covered in thick paint. This was it!

Outside of everything he did with Toto:

Major 1980s Pop & Rock Hits
  • Michael Jackson – "Beat It" (1982):While Eddie Van Halen played the solo, Lukather played the main signature riff and all rhythm guitar parts on this Thrillersmash.
  • Michael Jackson – "Human Nature" (1982): Lukather played guitar on this Thriller ballad, contributing to the "glue" of the track.
  • Olivia Newton-John – "Physical" (1981):Lukather played the stinging guitar solo on this No. 1 hit.
  • Lionel Richie – "Running with the Night" (1983): Lukather provided the high-energy, melodic guitar solo.
  • Cher – "If I Could Turn Back Time" (1989): Lukather played on this huge comeback hit.
  • Stevie Nicks – "Stand Back" (1983):Lukather is the guitarist on this iconic track.
  • Don Henley – "Dirty Laundry" (1982):Lukather contributed to this hit, working alongside Danny Kortchmar and Joe Walsh.
Session Work for Rock & Pop Icons
  • Boz Scaggs – "Breakdown Dead Ahead" (1980): Lukather played on this top-20 hit.
  • The Tubes – "She's a Beauty" (1983):Lukather not only played on this, but co-wrote this major 80s hit.
  • George Benson – "Turn Your Love Around" (1981): Lukather co-wrote this Grammy-winning song (with Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin) and played on it.
  • Earth, Wind & Fire – "Back on the Road" (1980): Lukather provided the soloing on this track.
  • Cheap Trick – "Voices" (1979): Lukather contributed to this popular track.
  • Michael McDonald – "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" (1982):Lukather played on this classic.
  • Rod Stewart – "Rhythm of My Heart" (1991): Lukather lent his guitar work to this ballad.

Yup.

I posted his entire session list here a few years back but am not going to attempt that again 'cause it took me ages to edit the bullet-point characters and font in the interests of the standard forum format and consistently-readable / scannable viewing.

Suffice to say that AFAIK he's played on more records and hittoons than any other guitarist.

Same goes for Jeff Porcaro, only on drums of course. I posted that list somewhere here too a long time ago.

It is a beaut for certain. I nearly bought a Luke II about 12 years back. Pewter grey with a solid rosewood neck. The EMGs were the show stopper for me for whatever reason that day. The solid rosewood neck was glorious though.
