Wow, this much drama over two guys no one outside a guitar forum/magazine has ever heard of.

No. Actually Malmsteen was a huge star all over the world for many years. He's influenced countless guitar players and had hits on mainstream radio.

Do I really have to tell you this?

Talented yes, but hardly a mainstream success. I am not a fan myself, but according to his wiki page, he only cracked the top 10 twice in Sweden and barely cracked the top 50 twice in the states.

old thread ...well....I can appreciate both guitarists...but YJM is always going to be at the top of my list of favorite guitarists

MAB

Fook Da fury...
While we both appreciate Zakk Wylde I'm in total disagreement with you on this one. MAB can play fast as hell but YJMs tone, phrasing and vibrato are wayyyyyyyyyy better than MAB. No YJM, no MAB. Just like No EVH, no VAI, Satch, Lynch, DeMartini, etc...

My 2 cents

If MAB is Michael Angelo, all I have to say is way back in the day I took lessons with Paul, guitar teched for Malmsteen and did some shows opening for Michael Angelo, nobody touched Malmsteen. I love Paul but Malmsteen was definitive sounding. When Ygnwie came out he leveled the world of guitar and was the dude that toppled Eddie.

Spot on James. Yngwie took rock guitar to a quantum leap post Eddie and did it with Integrity without any Compromise...Yngwie is a perfect example of an American success story. He comes over to States from Sweden with a pair of jeans, a strat and vision/attitiude in 83'. He basically made Mike Varney and Shrapnel Records and started that whole scene. Wrote the entire Alcatrazz music from no parole less than a two week period since they had NO songs , then gets signed on Polydor to release his first solo album at the age of 20 years midst that tour in Japan 84. the rest is history and became a very wealthy and successful musician while all his imitators are not so. The man has balls and must have a wrote a good song or in betweeen all those millions of records sold worldwide.

Completely agree with this!

Actually, and i SWEAR I'm not shitting you. I saw a fat chick in Target a few weeks ago wearing an Yngwie t-shirt. She looked like she should have been wearing a Snoop Dog shirt or something if you know what i mean. And i see people wearing Iron Maiden shirts sometimes who probably don't even know they were a band. I'm guessing these people win the shirts at carnivals or buy them cheap at flea markets?

Of course, as soon as I open my mouth, everyone is a fan.

Yngwie Malmsteen changed the game and did a whole string af very good albums. He has inspired thousands of budding players, including myself. I remember when the first solo-album was released. Still damn good.

What's even better is you can make fun of the most obscure 80's band that nobody's heard of and next thing you know the guitar player's best friend or roadie is on here. See Rusty Trombone threads.

Not trying to defend MAB, but if all you've ever heard was his days with Nitro then you should give these a listen. Yes there's still flash in there, but the song structure and melodies are much better.

I still prefer YJM, just so you know. :D

Man I struggled through those videos. Many notes were played but I didn't hear one original one in the whole lot. :aww:

There is some funny stuff in this thread. I saw Mike Batio at a club in Chicago when I was 17 and he was in the band Holland. He was pretty cool back then because he had to play songs that were written by Tommy Holland. Even at that age and having never seen Malmsteen, I knew Yngwie was at a completely different level. But..... has Yngwie ever topped his "Jet To Jet" solo from the first Alcatrazz?

And one last thing since we are discussing wigs...... it seems to me like Yngwie had very thin, wispy hair in those early days and was the kind of guy that would never really be able to grow it that long. Yet, miraculously his hair got real long and real thick. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little augmentation going on in there :)

Regardless, "Jet To Jet". Case closed.

Once you get past all the technical stuff and start listening to Yngwie's vibrato and phrasing, you understand how good he is.

Indeed.

Faster isn't better. I prefer Yngwie myself. MAB and Cooley are badass but speed just for speeds sake is pointless if your not melodic...just my opinion

That has to be some of the most obnoxious playing I've ever heard. It's just fast for the sake of fast. Ynqwie plays with a lot of fire and emotion. I just don't get MAB.

Yngwie can't come close to this. Then again he doesn't have the worst hair of all time like MAB :D What the hell is that guy thinking? I'm not a fan of either one but I'd say MAB definitely plays faster and cleaner than YJM. Anyone who's seen the Doug Marks Speed Kills with MAB can see that. On the other hand we all know that speed doesn't translate into making a song that sounds good, which neither one of them do to me :aww: .

That hair is funny.......MAB and Cris Impellitteri.....should have a shred off who sees who will be first to spontaneously burst into flames after playing the fastest 1 zillion notes for second scales.....

Above all he emphasized the idea of being original, and trying to find your own voice.

Which he completely fails at himself.

Kinda like a few years ago when Gary Hoey was doing a clinic on how to be original and write your own songs. Yet, at the time his only song getting any attention was a Pink Floyd cover of money.

That doesn't mean that he doesn't have a ton of songs that are original and his own. It just means that most people only tend to like what is familiar to then, which is why most pop is formulaic. How many great musicians do you know, that mainstream doesn't pay any attention to? I can think of quite a few.

As for MAB, I am not a fan but I think the only good thing he ever really did was Shock Em Dead, and he wasn't really in...just did all of the guitar parts and scenes.
