I used to like both when I was younger. Then I got tired of them especially Michael Angelo Batio.

I can still and sometimes do listen to old Yngnwie records. His new stuff is horrid!

I am a fan of Yngwie J. Malmsteen.... chops, melody, phrasing, vibrato, and tone.

Really? Someone can't have an opinion without producing their own material? So unless you played the same arenas and sold the same amount of albums or received blowjobs from the same women, your opinion is equally invalid? WTF kind of warped logic is that? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You, him, and everyone else. Yngwie has some fantastic work, and yeah..some of his work blows. I personally can last one song live, then again in that one song you will see basically all of his songs mushed up in one 10min song, regardless of which one he chose to play at that moment....throw in a few leg kicks, a twirl, a guitar spin, some sweat, 100 amps and a tiny tech cowering in the background.

I know it is hard for the YJM leg humpers to believe, but some people actually don't care for his music.

yngwie came onto the scene at a perfect time. sorta made king eddie's monopoly obsolete regarding the new shreddy kid on the block mentality. y changed the game in 83 like eddie did in 78. just when you were starting to wrap your head around ed's solos, yngwie redefined what it meant to burn with technical precision.

put the exclamation point on classically influenced metal. such dramatic leads he forced you to take notice. blackmore was throwing temper tantrums in rainbow and generally blowing chunks playing lone ranger motivated solos, when yngwie hit him right in the moneymaker, stealing his persona and running circles around him with bach melodies at paganini pace.

uli was in another league than blackmore, and yngwie did uli note for note more in tribute of an idol, than beating ritchie at his own arrogant gunslinger game.

i think shawn lane and jason becker took it even further still technically, as well as guthrie, and paul, but none of them have the historical significance in guitardom like ed and yngwie have.

and between those two, ed is rock hall of fame material...not so much yngwie due to his less mass appeal musical genre.

YJM made a name with very little creativity and originality and based the "WOW" factor on technical ability. It's like being able to type 5000 words a minute with amazing accuracy and saying what's already been written with very little originality or personal spin.

When you hear Ed, Hendrix, Atkins, etc even though they took from previous greats...... you know right off the bat who it is. YJM not so much.

Ever since you got your hands on that black box you are sliding backwards.  J/K

In all seriousness Yngwie to me is a playmaker like Eddie and Hendrix. When you hear any of the 3 you know them immediately. They defined genres even if they were influenced by others, they were the defining guys. Yngwies vibrato alone takes the 5000 word a minute analogy out of the window. It is more like typing 5000 words a minute while performing sexual favors on a swedish chick with a vibe o matic magic hand.

I like his early stuff the best, he has not moved forward as much as I wish he had, but who am I to really give an opinion on what he has done. He was and is a major influence on me. I hear so much style and phrasing in his playing and I dig it. The fact you do not see it does not make either of us right. You have your opinions, but I think anybody that does not know Yngwie right off the bat really has not spent much time listening to his nuances. A lot of shredders copied him, but none of them copped his overall feel and swagger with the instrument.

I am a big fanboi for Yngwie so I am very biased. However I do not expect and do not care if others dislike him and or his playing. I do however find it difficult for others to not acknowledge his impact on guitar and his personality as a player enough to know it is him when you hear a piece by him.

I bet that Axe FX of yours also has a 5000 words a minute patch that will get you there today anyway, so the work and practice he put in on walls of Marshalls on 10 no longer matter....

I take it back. I wasn't feeling tip-top that fine day.

I think I'll check in to rehab, or some sort of f'n treatment program - maybe hook up with Weiner. :)

This is easily one of the most retarded arguments ever to grace the Internet.

"You don't like X, so you must now post your stuff that without a doubt proves you're better than X, otherwise your opinion is rendered invalid".

I don't like Camaros, does that mean I have to post time slips of my Toyota family car running 13's in the quarter?

I can see something valid with people getting sick of opinions on the internet and wanting the person who is being negative to back it up. Not so much in this case as it is just a simple one person likes one thing and the other does not. Nothing to prove there IMHO.

However with the Internet it is so easy to say this clip sucks, and you should have done it this/that way. This recording has to many effects. Yest it is still simple like and dislike and everybody is entitled to an opinion. However an internet opinion is so much easier to have and be negative than a real life opinion and in specific context. For example in Real Life if you were at the family soccer game and said you don't like Camaros nobody would care that you drive a Toyota family car. However if you were at the track and stated this a driver of a Camaro who has a passion for them would probably ask you what you drive and what qualified you to make that statement.

So to ask for some point of reference or to back up what you are saying on the internet is not retarded or invalid to me.

YMMV

Well, there is actually a very cool interview where Guthrie talks about Yngwie, basically saying how good he really is and that he is one of his heroes.

It is, and it isn't. The problem is that you're never going to get away from retarded opinions. More importantly, they should state their opinion intelligently and not need to back anything up.

What good would it be to post a clip in response to something like that anyway? YouTube is proof alone that no matter how good someone is, someone will always say it sucks. So again, it's meaningless. There are 12 year olds playing Paul Gilbert perfectly, and being torn apart because their tone isn't good enough, or their phrasing is slightly off, or they're not original. Things that would get you punched in the dick if you said it in person.

you can dislike something, that is ok since all is personal taste at the end, for example i do not like gilbert stuff, but that is just my personal taste and i still think he is a great player

BUT call it "horrid" is complety different imo
