Live after death....
Grew up on both. For me I guess what day or mood I’m in. :thumbsup:
Just monsters of a band. :rock:
 
Man you can't make a person choose between them. i just can't do it. 50/50 for me.

All the respect in the world for Priest, but for me it's not even close. Hallowed be thy Name FTW :) Still gives me goosebumps. Cheers!
 
Priest by a wide margin. Has there ever been a more versatile heavy metal band? I think not.
 
I have never been a huge fan of either, but if I was forced to pick one, it would be Maiden. So many memorable songs....

I think the only Priest song I REALLY like is Painkiller. That is probably because of the awesome cover by Death, lol.
 
Priest Priest Priest, I was 15 when British steel came out. It was all new music to us growing up and then screaming for vengeance , The first time you heard Hellion/ Electric Eye it was holy shit.
 
Both are amazing, but Live After Death was one of my favorite albums ever. Plus, watching it on VHS was nothing short of surreal for me. From Iron Maiden to Somewhere in Time everything was perfect!
 
They are both great...my first learned songs on my cheapo Arbor LP clone were Breaking the Law and Heading out to the Highway. Priest will always have a place..been listening to Vengeance lately.

But as much as I love JP it was Bruce Dickinson who knocked me on my ass with those searing vocals....Rob Halford may be the greatest Metal vocalist ever but Bruce is my personal Fav. My first 'real' concert was Priest at the LaCrosse Center on the Vengeance tour. Saw them on "Defenders" too...

But after all these yrs I finally saw Maiden in 2012 at Rock Fest here in Wi...great show and for guys in their mid 50s, amazing.
Can't say enough about both bands really...These 2 were my reasons for picking up the guitar in the first place.

This is a choice that no self respecting man should ever have to make. Love them both.

I dig Judas Priest by a long shot.
There was a time in the early 80s where I just adored Iron Maiden.

But Priest crept in...and here's where the difference is- Judas Priest has reimagined themselves so many times it is staggering. I actually like each version too:
early blues rock
late 70s Unleashed in the East
early 80s groove Metal
pop Turbo (not so much there lol)
Painkiller: this was a game changer for me- blew me away on so many levels. :rock:
Ripper: I love this era! Nasty nasty guitar tones tuned down a half a step. It flopped for most but freaking love it
2000s Judas Rising: Halford comeback! This was a killer follow up to Painkiller
double disc Nostrodamous: flop for me, but I respect the attempt at epic ness
recent replacements- these new guitar players are amazing, curious if they can keep the empire going? Not the same of course but they really bring they JP flavor

Compare that to Iron Maiden:
Dianno 2 discs: sensational
early Dickinson: sensational


but then once they hit a certain point, it kind of all has that flavor- a flavor of opera singing that I kind of dislike know, much like how I loved Dream Theater but now find them unlistenable due to the vocals. I still enjoy the new IM releases, but only for a few plays and I am done.

I guess after writing this out they are closer than I thought. For tonight I would pop in JP so much faster than IM (I think?)

I think the real issue is this clown is all I can think of these days when you say Iron Maiden

The priest. Maiden with Paul was epic! Bruce did have a ste he lost after his first. Listen to his scales and how he would come to the note, then vibrato. Every album after was all over the place. Sloppy operatic wavering all over. Just a mess in comparison to beast...and how many albums did the priest produce that just kill. Stained class, sad wings, screaming for vengeance. When they came back to revisited the British Steel front to back we endured nearly having not only my head but the entire crowds heads blown right off. They played so loud and evenly the entire album and halford killed. So stunningly brutal with complete control. Everyone knew the power, no way did maiden have that enduring power. It was lost after Bruce made his debut.

Btw, if it wasn't for priest writing the ripper on sad wings all the king diamond fans wouldn't have the, absolutely, all time, heaviest cover, EVER to be relished by fans. Tuned down it just has it all.

how do you rate "Ram it Down"? ... I personally think it is way underrated. It is the perfect bridge from mid 80's priest to 90's Priest. I think the fact they released "jonhnny be goode" as a bloody single was the death nail for the album ... yes it is a great cover but there are so many great songs on the album that should have been pushed ahead of it and "Thunder Road" should have been on the album instead of it
 
Priest's 70's albums blow away every else for me, I never realized how truly amazing they were as a band until I made it back that far (same with the Scorpions). Yeah, Screaming for Vengeance was classic, and if you like really heavy Painkiller was good. But Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class, and Killing Machine were on a whole other level...and Maiden doesn't come remotely close in terms of musicianship either IMO. Also, Unleashed in the East is probably one of the greatest live albums of all time.

Took me a few times to listen to this one but I would love to learn the lead to it, i dont know what you call that one part of the lead run but man thats so killer...the whole song is great!!! Big Priest fan!!!

I simmered on this overnight. Still Maiden for me. I remember when I was in high school and I would read the liner notes on every damn album. I sat there with my buddy's "Powerslave" album and just stared at the picture on the front. It was the coolest album cover I'd ever seen. Same with "Live After Death".

Whenever I hear the beginning of "2 Minutes to Midnight", it always gives me chills. So many great songs. With that said, I love Judas Priest as well and even got a CD box set from someone here on the forum years ago.

I dig Ram it Down. When it was released I really enjoyed it- I was hot on Defenders and right on it, saw the live show and was blown away. In retrospect, it suffers for me because Painkiller just took that same thing and did it exponentially better in every way, including the new drummer. and Yes, Johnny B Goode was an odd selection, lol. I'll need to jam this again to re-review.
 
I saw Priest on the Turbo tour. And Angel of retribution tour.
Both amazing. The highlight for me was the Turbo tour. Lights dropped. They went into Love Bites.
Playing that intro on a double neck bass just shook and rattled the whole arena! I thought the roof would collapse!
Ahhhh........ good times :rock:
