They're both awesome, but Maiden just kicks so much ass.

I didn`t include Sad Wings but it is awesome . No particular order there for me at least

Slight edge to Maiden .... but agreed with comment about Janick, that guy is a total embarassment and a mess up there. Doesn't take anything seriously, butchers leads and probably knows he is turned down in the mix for extreme suckage. Unfortunate because he used to be solid and was good on Tattoo'd Millionaire but since Adrian has been back, I don't see the point in him. Sloppiest pro ever. up the Irons? More like Up ( and down ) the Beers hours before every show...

I dig Judas Priest by a long shot.
There was a time in the early 80s where I just adored Iron Maiden.

But Priest crept in...and here's where the difference is- Judas Priest has reimagined themselves so many times it is staggering. I actually like each version too:
early blues rock
late 70s Unleashed in the East
early 80s groove Metal
pop Turbo (not so much there lol)
Painkiller: this was a game changer for me- blew me away on so many levels.
Ripper: I love this era! Nasty nasty guitar tones tuned down a half a step. It flopped for most but freaking love it
2000s Judas Rising: Halford comeback! This was a killer follow up to Painkiller

how do you rate "Ram it Down"? ... I personally think it is way underrated. It is the perfect bridge from mid 80's priest to 90's Priest. I think the fact they released "jonhnny be goode" as a bloody single was the death nail for the album ... yes it is a great cover but there are so many great songs on the album that should have been pushed ahead of it and "Thunder Road" should have been on the album instead of it

Yeah I mentioned this a few weeks back... total underrated album and you can see the early morphing into what would become Painkiller. Man alive that lead on Ram it Down. Glenn and K.K firing on all cylinders and then some!

Dianno Maiden is really something special. Don't forget Clive Burr on the drums. Nicko is/was a beast but Burr had this pushd tempo aspect to his playing and really cool snare work which sort of drove that early sound along with Dianno's voice. Maiden for me is incredible up to No Prayer and that is where it falls apart. Recording in some country recording studio, sounds small, loose, missing the epic and Adrian was about to tap out. New Maiden is solid. I just don't last on it. Much preferred the two albums Bruce did when Adrian came back to help out Bruce's solo career. Accident of Birth is an amazing album and so is the follow up.

Priest for me. I’ll spare you my full reasoning, but I’ve enjoyed many great albums by both bands. In a live situation however, Priest was superior in my opinion. Saw both bands several times in their prime. The power of Priest live in the 80’s was something to behold and there sound was always compressed and clear. So good.

That guy is a wannna be. Cut dry.
Bring back original Live after Death Crue.....
Solid.

Great poll, Dan! I'm a big fan of both, but I gotta go Priest. I have played half a dozen Priest songs in bands over the years. Never played any Maiden on stage, but I love a ton of their stuff, too. They are both great!

Ah man... thats a hard question to answer. Growing up I had more Maiden posters and albums by a long shot but I think Priest has a stronger influence on what I listen to and how I like to play. Screaming for Vengeance, British Steel, Defenders of the Faith... power chords that are just etched into my mind set. Not that Maiden isn't, Its just that I haven't truly loved loved Maiden since Powerslave. I think that whole synth guitar thing on Somewhere in time still irks me... then again so does Turbo

Edit: Just realized I babbled without answering lol... Priest

Stained Class and Sad Wings are 2 of my top 3 Priest albums as well. Les Binks was their best drummer IMO.

I will marginally give the nod to Maiden though; in some ways they've been more consistent in their quality, whereas Priest could sometimes write epic and total shitshow songs. I mean, "Victim of Changes" and "United" came from the same band, or "Screaming for Vengeance" and "Red, White and Blue".

Also, I'm in a Maiden tribute, where we used to do Priest stuff as well (basically 2 sets per show; one Priest and one Maiden set), but even though it still itches to play certain Priest songs live that we never did yet (Starbreaker, Dissident Aggressor, Exciter e.a.), we noticed that the audience's reaction to our Priest set was sometimes a bit lacklustre, whereas with the Maiden set, we killed each time. It also didn't help our singer would forget some Priest lyrics or do this almost 'childish twang' vocal sound to mimic certain more nasal-sounding Halford songs, whereas Maiden seemed to flow more naturally from him.
So we decided to let the Priest stuff go and focus on being an awesome Maiden tribute. The whole idea initially to do a double-tribute was that there were so many Maiden tribute bands already, we felt we had to bring something more unique. In the end our overall quality was apparently enough to earn our spot in a pretty crowded area.

priest is the archetype and the daddy
Maiden is the wayward ass kicking son that took the blueprint in a different direction
I can't fuck with maiden much after powerslave.
that idiot they have on 3rd guitar is also a bummer

so priest has more material and a better sized catalouge
priest without KK and glenn is not really priest
like slayer without jeff and dave it's a facsimile
I love both but vote JP.

I have every Maiden cassette tape up through 7th Son, and still listen to them when I work in the garage, on my Sony jam box.
Everything else in digital.
I used to draw Eddie when bored in class.
One of the best concerts I've seen.
Maiden forever.
