as long as you're here- is this pre voiced mostly for Metal and Harder stuff or will it do warm, sweet tones , clean to medium gain but warm ( vaguely Gilmour, EJ, Timmons ) smoother tones or would it need to be revoiced ?

It's the most versitile preamp I own or have owned which includes just about all of them. Every channel sounds completely different from the next. I can't think of a comparison for the Clean channel but I definitely dig it. Think JTM 45 for the Crunch channels, Marshall Plexi/JCM for the Makoplex channel and a really nice modern metal sound for the Dorado. All four channels take nicely to my Maxon OD808 as well. I haven't found a power amp it doesn't sound good with either. Anything from a Rocktron Velocity 150 to the VHT 2150 shown.

^and this
I can't say it enough, the crunch channel is amazing. All of the channels behave totally differently. The clean channel is naturally dark. If you want a little more high end sparkle on your cleans, ask for the bright mod.

For sheer versatility- the MAKO 4 would still be the one, correct ?
Have any of you guys tried the MAKO 4 as a recording Preamp directly into EFX and cab IRs ?

Sure. But a 2 channel amp head is even more cumbersome and heavier and hey, offers only 2 channelsQweklain":e94eem4d said:I would love a Mak4, but the big turn off for me with it is that it is four spaces.
