Srommes and Sleewell - yeah was wondering when this Thread was coming to present BUT

as long as you're here- is this pre voiced mostly for Metal and Harder stuff or will it do warm, sweet tones , clean to medium gain but warm ( vaguely Gilmour, EJ, Timmons ) smoother tones or would it need to be revoiced ?

It's the most versitile preamp I own or have owned which includes just about all of them. Every channel sounds completely different from the next. I can't think of a comparison for the Clean channel but I definitely dig it. Think JTM 45 for the Crunch channels, Marshall Plexi/JCM for the Makoplex channel and a really nice modern metal sound for the Dorado. All four channels take nicely to my Maxon OD808 as well. I haven't found a power amp it doesn't sound good with either. Anything from a Rocktron Velocity 150 to the VHT 2150 shown.

I can't say it enough, the crunch channel is amazing. All of the channels behave totally differently. The clean channel is naturally dark. If you want a little more high end sparkle on your cleans, ask for the bright mod.

Thanks for the responses re the warmer, low and medium gain Tones- looks beautifully made and sounds like it has a good signal to noise Ratio also- could be great for Studio and maybe even into Cab IRs for super versatility when Recording.

I saw where Fast Red Pony Car requested smoother taper Gain Pots- so with those even the higher Gain channels could possibly yield some warmer tones- right ?

Thanks everyone!

I may have to go full steam ahead on the 2 RU Mak2 preamp. Similar to this layout:

It will be PTP on Turrets(no pcbs/no traces) 2 chan, solo boost, and mini toggles. You can choose the channels, i.e. chan1 is makoplex/chan 2 is Dorado etc.

You can follow it on Facebook.(you don't have to join)

Sorry for the driveby posting. It will not be cheaper than the Mak4 as it is PTP etc. I have one at home and it is simply very labor intensive but imho very cool.

Thanks for reading!

Have a safe and happy weekend!

Mini mak looks very cool would love to hear more about that as far as what the different controls do Clip? low/ hi/mid switches. Solo boost footswtchable ?

what is the estimated dimensions on the head

looks cool for sure .lots of controls

On the 2 channel Rack - you can pick any 2 channels- are they "expanded " versions of the Channels from the MAKO 4 or very similar ?

For sheer versatility- the MAKO 4 would still be the one, correct ?

Have any of you guys tried the MAKO 4 as a recording Preamp directly into EFX and cab IRs ?

I haven't tried it but it would probably work pretty well. The mak4 likes a pretty transparent power section so I think you could get a good result this way.

Tasty! Makoplex has got such a chewy, grindy, middy punch, right up to the uber-saturated top end.

Now, Dorado, OTOH....  Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.... Probably still one of the best hi-gain metal channels out there, period.

Still never quite got why these Mak4's aren't in the home of every player - they're certainly not expensive, they offer the incredible tones, they're unique sounding and have got their own thing going on, and they kick ass, period. So it goes.

The majority of my mak4 use is recording direct. I also use it live and at practice. Its my only amps, and I dont see myself buying anything but Mako products in the future lol. Anyway, I have a buttload of videos and clips...

With my old speakers:

Dorado channel, recorded direct:

Dicking around with my iphone:

Also direct, this one uses all 4 channels...clean is clean, main rhythms are dorado, solo is 1 track dorado then harmonized with makoplex, and the little swell solo is crunch channel:

Miced with an e609: http://tonefinder.com/?section=id&value=13156

I would love a Mak4, but the big turn off for me with it is that it is four spaces.

Sure. But a 2 channel amp head is even more cumbersome and heavier and hey, offers only 2 channels

Need more spaces? Buy a bigger rack. No biggy.

OR// Buy the Mak4 now, house it in yer rack, and when the newer 2U version comes out, buy it, flip the 4U unit, and pick up a GCX or something else that has a purpose.
