I still get the howling feedback loud at jam. l but have not changed to variac yet when we play. Probably another preamp blown again. Second time this is happened. Is this just because of lugging it around once a week to jam or gigs that they get knocker around or does Mesa just have a problem with the preamps for the V? Thanks.

This is the Diezel forum :poke:

you're right, but i think he deserved his diezel-family support being such a good customer^^

@topic: no ides about mesas, sorry mate. just get a herb instead of the mark V ;)

ooops what a tool. I had the Diezel forum opened LOL as I used to have too VH4's till i move to the Mark V. Sorry guys.

i dont think the variac will solve your prob but its worth a try, i also get the squeal when i put the amp to a certain level of "loud" and i remember it happening when i put it in both full power and variac ....

its weird cuz sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt ..... where do you keep your "output volume" on the amp ????

also try lowering both the treble and gain knobs the louder you put the amp ....

its funny that mesa tells you in the manual that the mark 5 is such a nutty amp that it makes alot of tube microphonics in high gain mode

Hey Rich, yeah I have the channel volumes some what down. Maybe they should come up a bit and lower the overall output volume. But will see what happens today. I do notice the most right treble slider has a lot to do with it as some times that is a quick cure to get rid of it. Trial and error. :D

What brand/type of tubes are you running?
Casey, the preamps are Doug's tubes "Mesa" Coctail. So they vary from sovtek to Tong Sol, EH etc. The Power amps I switched to Tung Sol EL 34's

When you are moving around the amp, do you wait for the amp to fully cool before moving it?

Do you have any lower gain preamp tubes you can try like 5751's? I used to have 5751's in the preamp of my mark IVA and they sounded great.

Not really. What happens is that it is all set up at home for home playing, then goes into my car when I leave so obviously the heat is on, then right into the studio. I make sure I plug it in and into a cab there and turn it on. But once i turn it off, I should shut it down right away when down jamming, as it takes me like 10-15 min to break down the pedals in the loop, pack up cables, guitars in gig bags then into the SUV. Is that ample time?

If it is still happening. I may bight the bullet and just buy a set of preamp tubes from Mesa and not mess around with various tubes Doug sold me. The EL 34's seem fine, but noob I am; I assume that probably would not be the cause of the issue? Would the recticifer tube for the M V maybe an issue? When I bought the "cocktail" I got a Electro Harmonix rectifier tube.

I will look into the 5751 preamp tubes.

On a side note, I wish they made the front of the amp grill and wood behind it come off easily to access the preamps. Pain in the ass. I thought I could. took off the grill front, found a wood panel with screws.....was like sweet!....Nope the screws of the wood panel are glued. I am assuming I just can take out the unit from the back to change the preamps but I am good at it as I take my time but still a pain in the ass.

Thanks.

15 minutes should be enough time for the amp to cool down before you move it. With my mark IV, I moved it within 5 minutes after it was running. The next time I turned it on, I had a bad power tube. The power tube could have been going, but I always try to let my amps cool as much as possible before moving them.

Its too bad the front panel doesn't come off more easily, on the mark IVA its just velcro'ed on.

Well back form Jam, and not feedback issues or squeal. Just the good feedback ;)

The only thing I did prior to our last jam was make some new slider settings and knob tweaking. So I think I am OK. The sliders seem to be so key for everything LOL

yea the spax tube is super quiet ... but i have a tung sol in my v1 now and it seems quieter for some reason

its just the nature of the beast, when i had my mark 4A it was a noisy ass amp .... i just think cuz the marks have so much saturation you can eventually run into noise issues ..... either way i love my mark 5

Yeah it sounded good tonight. Here are some quick clips before they showed up on some riffs I am working on. Just using a Zoom H4 and 2 SHure SM57's to mic the whole room.
Mark IV Mode, and CH1 clean with Chorus/PS-5
