The problems that is posed is that the HBE has no variables in terms of gain; the amount of gain you get out of it preset. You're probably going to have better luck with switchable masters, plugged into the HBE with one set of gains and masters set cleaner and the other being more gainy. The HBE can sound almost the same as BE, and to be honest
you can get a BETTER (more cohesive, less farty) high gain sound if you have switchable master where your high gain channel is the BE with the SAT switch engaged via a relay. Basically a 3 channel amp. Dave's done a few of these and they are pretty rippin'.
We always talk about discontinuing the HBE at the shop. It just doesn't sound nearly as good as the SAT switch, and the SAT switch is a whole lot easier to install than another preamp tube. And it's half the price...
