Marshall 1960 "Vintage" cabs...

So a good brother, Josh Haynes, has my Zinky 2x12 and loves it.

I've got his Marshall 1960 "Vintage" cab to play with. I opened it up, looks like MDF back and sides and a plywood baffle. Speakers appear to be 16 ohm Vintage 30's with the Marshall "Vintage" logo.

Speaker wires aren't soldered and are tiny.

Can these cabs make great tone? looks like 16 ohm mono is series at the jack. Got decent tone using a super hot bridge pickup, but lower winds produced HARSH highs. This cab has been gigged for like 8 years so it's broken in.

Anyone get monster rock toanz out of one of these things? Thinking I might trade, sell it, and get a Bogner or Zinky 4x12.

I have one and think it sounds great with my Splawn modded marshall & Marsha.. If I were buying a new one I prolly wouldn't spend the cash on it and would go with something else but for the used price I got it at its great! I
 
What's the ohms on yours? It is series or parallel wired at the jack?
 
I had that cab, and was never happy with the speakers. Those are NOT the same as regular V30s (although some people will say they are).
 
I am surprised the sides are MDF. I thought the 1960 series was plywood except of the back. :confused:
 
Mine is wired just at 16ohms mono.. I also heard that they are different than v30s.. I dunno though , its killer with my Splawn Plexi..
 
Yeah, it's particle, like an MG cab or something. I can't believe they charge $949 for these things. I'm gonna get my Zinky cab back.
 
Had my amp repair tech re wire it and I got rid of
that switch in the back, 16 ohm now and it sounds
pretty good,lacking lowend compared to my Mesa
but still kicks out well.I use it for dirty gigs.
However I'm now sold on the 100 watt Marshall TV 4x12's.
 
How are these not vintage 30 speakers? I thought that was the whole reason for calling it a 1960AV or BV, it's because it has those speakers. I used to have one of these and I know I looked at the speakers and it had vintage 30's in it. As far as the quality of plywood they uses for the cab, I don't remember but if you see MDF there, I can't argue that. I guess it's Birch MDF...? 7ply birch mdf.

That is disappointing. Not a fan of MDF in guitar cabs. I found out my Ampeg bass cab was MDF too :doh:

$949 is alot for a mostly MDF cab. I am changing the back on my 2556AV cab to Plywood, very curious if I can hear a different. I am putting a new jack plate on and didn't want to cut into the stock MDF back.

And those Marshall Vintage 30's are supposed to be different than the standard V30's you buy. Never done an A/B between the 2 though.
 
I have a 1960AV and a Rivera K412T with "real" V30s. I tightened up everything on the Marshall and caulked around the front baffle. They sound virtually identical. They sound damn good with both of my Splawns.
 
I have a cab like in the thread title, a VHT fatbottom, a Bogner 4x12 and a Mesa oversized recto cab with armor and leather (V30s) among others.

For some amps, I liked the marshall 1960 vintage cab better. Just different flavors IMHO, if I found another vintage cab for a good price I'd probably nab it.

Marshall has been using MDF/particle board type stuff on the back of cabs since the late 70's at least. I had a mid to late 70's 4x12 with the stuff.

This whole cab save the baffle is MDF.
 
Rewired it with 12ga radio shack hook up wire, series/parallel, and there it is! TOANZ DRIPPIN FROM TEH MARSHALL LOGO!

Shame on them for crippling this beastie of heavenly goodness with tiny, unsoldered wire and parallel/series wiring. FOR SHAME! :thumbsdown: :gethim: :doh:
 
ok, how about some pics of the MDF. I've had a few Marshall cabs and I've never seen one with that except on the back panel. I'm just curious as to what you are looking at.
 
I always get rid of the stereo jack thingy and straight wire them with 14-12 gauge wire, I've had 2 of those jack panels fail over the years, and yes, the wire that comes in them is crap.
Honestly, I did not hear a ton of difference in the tone, I'm suprised yours was very different. I was never really happy with them running high-gain, I pretty much keep them on whatever head I'm using for cleans, they work ok for that
both of mine are plywood with MDF backs
 
I've got one of these and wanted to do this as well, does anyone have a wiring diagram for this speaker cab, and for those that got rid of the switch what did you use to cover up that huge ass square hole in the back haha?
