I have them in an X pattern now but was wondering if putting the V30's on top and the ET65's on the bottom would have any advantages.

I have the same speakers in my 1960b. Tried both. The 65's on top were a little better than 30's on top, but I like the X pattern best.

X. Just make sure your sound man knows which speaker to mic.

Simple enough to do with those cabs, so just give it a go!

I used to do X pattern but now have a top/bottom mix in a cab.
The cab is oversized and straight, so it sounds very deep and dark. I put two V30's on the top because I wanted to hear that loud midrange projection from that speaker closer to my ears.

Then I put two Veteran 30 speakers on the bottom since they are smoother and not as bright or stinging as the V30s. Plus, I will hear them less when standing at high volumes.

With a slant cab like yours, you'll have to decide if you want that cutting V30 sting up top where it will be slanted up towards you, or maybe you want the smoother 65's up top for less of that upper mid bite...? The 65 has great mids in its own right.

The V30 rocks but not always needed pointed at your face. Unless you want it. I have a slant Mesa Trad. and it works with that cab. So it depends on your opinion of the cab's inherent sound as well as the speaker's tone.

I recommend trying this;

Interesting. That was my initial thought also but when I play through the cab now and move my ear to be beamed by one or the other speakers, the V30 sounds smoother and the 65 a touch brighter. I picked up the V30's used so I am guessing that they are well broken in.

The older I get, the less excited I become about taking a cab apart and swapping speakers!

Ok then, V30's on top may be what you need...
What I find easy is to; lay the cab on it's front and undo all the screws with a cordless drill, but let them stay in their holes.
Pry the back off and just reposition the back so each corner speaker gets exposed one at a time and swap them in and out. (Leave the jack assembly alone too.)
Then I just slide the back on again and hit the screws which are already all inserted (centre post first!)
It's the fastest way I've found at least. Really easy with the 1960's too.

I never liked my

always liked them in an X...

Always put the speaker with more bass on the bottom.

X-pattern causes more phase notches in the room. Very noticeable if you move around the front of a closed back cab. Can be a good or bad thing depending on your taste. Personally I prefer top & bottom / Not - X....

Hell, I have a different speaker in every position.

I wasn't crazy about speakers in an X pattern if you stand in front of the cap and you move a few inches to either side it sounds different. I ran Green berets on top with V30s on the bottom with nice results. Im sure the 65's up top would sound fine, and vice versa.

Are you still using that cab & have you used it at band volumes much ?

The reason I ask is I am thinking about putting a greenback, H30, V30 & 85 in both of my 4x12's....Right now I have no 85's when using the stack.

Steve, I only use it at home with low to moderate volume. I did it for recording so I could just move the mic for different flavors. One of these days though I might just get a room at Evo in Bellevue for an hour and crank the sucker up as I'm jonesin' pretty hard for some pant flappage.

Ed convinced me I should keep my cabinets different for different sounds ..... but the truth is I almost always use the full stack. If I switched them around I would have two 4x12's the same & my 2x12 would be V30's. I about never use the 85's in my 2x12 because by themselves they do not have enough midrange for my taste.

If you do rent the room - maybe I will come up and check it out ? I would like to hear your gear cranked..... :)
