I'm looking to get a matching cab from the early 80's to match my veritical input 2204. I thought I read somewhere that the construction changed sometime in the 80's and the cabs became lower quality. Is this true? If so what year/serial # should I be looking for.

Thanks in advance

Not sure.
Unfortunately, these cabs can sound either ok, great, or pathetic depending on the day of the week.

Yeah, I've heard. However, I thought that was only true of the more modern built cabs. Isn't there more consistency with the older ones?

I'm really not sure. Maybe look for a JCM800 cab. Same as the 1960. Often better speakers. Should be better build I would think. Just assuming...

I would say pre 03 , Marshalls after 02 started coming with Chinese celestions as that's when celestions plant was moved i believe.

I'd be more concerned with the cab build quality then where the speakers are made. That argument has no merit to it and it's pure rubbish.

Yeah, I was more interested in knowing about cab construction/materials. I thought I remember reading that a change in materials (i.e. particle board vs birch) occurred sometime in the 80's or 90's. I could have dreamt this though

Maybe I'll ask this over at the Marshall Forums.

Their cabs were always all plywood. It was sometime in the 80's I think, when they starting using particle board for the back board.

i have Marshall 1960BHW that feels & looks well built but i'm no expert

If I remember correctly it was '71 or '72 when Marshall went to the particle board backs.

If cab construction is the only concern I recommend a 75 - 90 era cab. They are old enough to have mojo yet not in that absolute collectible realm. I have 2 late 70's b cabs and because the tolex was messed up I got them for $200 a piece.

im trying to get ahold of a 1984 JCM800 cab...i talked the dude down a bit on price, and offered him the 2 G12m70s i took out of my laney cab (he wants a 2x12, and hell need speakers, right?)

thing is, the cab is loaded with m70s...so was my Laney. supposedly they suck, but i used them for years with no trouble and decent tone. i can always replace them later, but if they sound ok, ill live with em. i just wish he would get back to me, i want to try the damn thing out! LOL

I'm in the same boat, looking for an '84 JCM800 cab. I also have a guy locally selling one but he doesn't know the exact date. He says mid to late 80's. It's in very good shape with near perfect tolex and all original G12T-75's. What is your guy asking?
