I was listening to some Marshall 2466 Vintage Modern clips on youtube and this clip(Van halen VH1 $250 guitar challenge sound test)caught my attention. The person is using a 2466 Vintage Modern, take a listen.

I have not heard the clip you are reffering to. I have been a Vintage Modern player for years. My main amp before I got my 5150II modded by FJA. I think a regular Plexi will get you closer than the VM. Boosted the VM gets kinda the Velvet Revolver Slither tone. Do a search on you tube for me and I have lots of vids up of my 2466. Robin Trower was using it for awhile to.

Go to youtube and type in(Van halen VH1 $250 guitar challenge) and listen. The guy has a stocking hat on.

He did well and that does sound really good. Thats how that amp sounds. But to me it's not quite the VH tone.

I hope your listening to the right clip, the clip I'm talking about the guy has a stocking hat on.Is that the clip your listening to if it is its very van halen 1 sounding. No question about it.To say it doesnt sound like van halen 1,wow.....

I've owned two VM2466s. If I was hellbent on the early EVH tone I would use a Plexi. Just my 2 cents.

Yes thats the clip.I was just listening to a few 2466 VM clips and this clip caught my attention. It has the cut/drive/edge that you hear on van halen 1(first album). It doesnt always have to be a plexi thats for your.

Funny, I remember checking out a Strat at a Guitar Center. They had a Vintage Modern half stack right there, so I used it, and swore I got the best early VH tone just using the single coil bridge pickup and the VM! Must be the lower gain, and the bigger headroom power tubes.

If only the VM had the reissue transformers!

Hello AndyK,I'm going to see if I could find one to play today. What did you mean about the reissue transformers.im just looking for a backup amp to my Rockitt retro(68 Plexi clone)Rockstah modded Mod5.

Hey-

The Vintage Moderns are fine amps, but some of the transformers hum, and are all small (like the DSL's). No big deal, but I like giant iron in my amps!

Try one. I found there just wasn't enough gain for me, so I sold my 50 watt VM years ago.

Yeah, I don't hear VH1 at all either..not the right amp for it if you ask me unless the guy cranked the crunch channel and used eq to push it further. To be honest, I think people equate the vh sound with a plexi because that is what he used (obviously)but also because that amp sounds great on the verge of blowing up. I think that VM could get closer if someone opened up the crunch channel and a lot of amps could get ballpark when cranked. The rockstah mod5 worked so great because that amp is getting grind from the power section. It's a 2204.

The guy is getting good tones but there's literally dozens upon dozens of clips that sound as good or closer than this that we've heard over the years. Go listen to the Rockstah mod 5 clips and suddenly you'll realize that these clips actually aren't that close.

Or Zachman here.

I own one of Rockstah modded amps(Rockitt Retro 68 Plexi clone-mod5) so I know all about Mark and his clip like I said I'm just looking for a backup amp.The 2466 vintage modern clip that posted sound very much like VH1.

Not sure if stores have stock still lingering around, but they discontinued the VM a couple months back.
Great amp- it's been my main amp since 2008.

The clip sounds real good to me Im going to look for one today. Some need to realisten to Van halen 1(first album)and then compare the clip.

OP just because you say it is very VH I doesn't mean it's a fact, it's opinion and subjective. I def think it's ballpark but as others have said there are lots of closer examples I've heard over the years. If it does it for you that's all that matters of course :D

AndyK it's sounds good but the VM sounds brighter and more cutting/edge.

63 strat I'm not pushing the issue,to me the clip sounds very vh1 sounding I compared it to the first VH album and its pretty hard to say it doesn't .

Anyways, if it's just going to be a back-up amp, and you like it, who cares what other people think it sounds like?
