Marshall branded V30's that come in the 1960 Vintage cabs. Are these any different than regular V30's? Better? Worse? Same?

inquiring minds want to know! :)

Yes, they are different. I personally don't like them. They are brighter and thinner.

same here, still have 2 of them in a 1936 cab

Thanks guys. I'm used to hearing greenbacks so this cab sounded different than I'm used to, but for $250 it was a no brainer for me. I'll try mixing it with some greenbacks and see what works best for me.

I was just curious as to what I had. Not sure if they were like the Hellatone speakers where they are broken in, or they just slapped a Marshall sticker over a stock V30.

Glad to know a few people like them if I decide i don't and want to dump them.

Definitely brighter, they cut like a razor. But the highs can be piercing with the wrong amp. They are the first version of a V30, came out in 86/87 in the Jubilee cabs. Mesa V30s are the darkest, followed by regular V30s and then the Marshall.

At this point, there is a ton of info out there on this subject, but basically there are three different V30's.

Mesa V30
Marshall V30
China V30

All sound different, Marshall is the crunchiest, Mesa is the clearest, and China is the fizziest.

There is more than three different V30. I can think of 5 off the top of my head.

Yeah..there are at least 5. Bad Cat uses a tweaked proprietary UK version too like Mesa. And can someone confirm that the Mesa V30s are still the same English ones they've always used? I saw a classified ad stating that they now use Chinese. Not sure I believe that.

FWIW I loved the Marshall branded V30s I played through in a Marshall Mode 4 cab (not the amp so much, haha) I'm sure the cab had a lot to do with it but they were very balanced compared to the Mesa standard OS 412 we had right next to it.

Care to share with the class?

What are the 5?

As far as I know, there are only 3 versions of the Celestion V30, from Celestion. The Marshall "Vintage" (not V30!), the original UK ones (which are still offered as the Mesa ones), and the Chinese ones. The V30s from Bad Cat don't come from Celestion that way. They are just off-the-shelf speakers that Bad Cat messes with. I think they treat the cones with some chemical. What are the other versions y'all are talking about?

I thought same but then thought maybe the Mesa 8ohm and Celestion 8ohm might be the other two (Marshall are only 16ohm). Allegedly even changing impedance makes a difference.

I guess I'm including different ohms and speaker codes as different versions.
I remembered a thread here from a few years back where Fryette listed all the different V30 speaker codes but I guess they do fall into those three categories; Mesa, Marshall, and Chinese.
That and the Bad Cat versions (which I thought came different from celestion but as FourT6and2 pointed out they are just treated by Bad Cat themselves.

Here ya go:

And now you know that when you say V30, you could be talking about 5 different speakers - that all sound slightly different:*

T3903 Standard 8 ohm
T3904 Standard 16 ohm
T3987 Marshall OEM 16 ohm
T4416 Mesa OEM 16 ohm
T4335 Mesa OEM 8 ohm

When you change the impedance rating of the speaker, you also change the inductance of the coil which changes the resonant frequency among other things. So if you have 2 identical amps and 2 identical cabs - one cab loaded with 8 ohm speakers and amp set to 8 next to one loaded with 16 ohm speakers and amp set to 16, they will sound noticably different. The 16 ohm rig will usually sound brighter and deeper.

there's also T5321 Marshall Vintage 30 MF aka Hellatone 60L, the OEM speaker from the Mode Four 280 cabs. they only came in 16 ohms.

Marshall G12 Vintage speakers also come in 16 ohms with the following T-number: T3897 and T3896 for 8 ohms. So, 3 types of 'Marshall Vintage 30s' exist.

Celestion also makes a 5.3 ohm variant for some 3x12 cabs: T4455.

So:

T3896 Marshall G12 Vintage 8 ohm
T3897 Marshall G12 Vintage16 ohm
T3903 Standard 8 ohm
T3904 Standard 16 ohm
T3987 Marshall OEM 16 ohm
T4335 Mesa OEM 8 ohm
T4416 Mesa OEM 16 ohm
T4455 Standard 5.3 ohm
T5321 G12 Vintage MF

I have a pair there 444 cones and are darker and smoother than the V30tys that came stock in my Bogner cab killer speakers.

Okay, those are the ones I mentioned in my first post in this thread. I love those speakers! Not sure how much of it was the MF cab but they were my favorite V30s and I've had the Mesa Vs in my recto 212 and currently have a Bogner (chinese) V30 and g12t-75 loaded in it.

To answer my own question about the Mesa OEM V30s; yes they are the same English made T4416 and 4335 speakers that they've used for years. You can still order them from their website.
I know I saw someone trying to sell a "rare" Mesa 412 here or on TGP stating that they don't use the same speakers but according to MB they do :)

I guess if someone wants to get real technical and count the different ohm load versions, sure, there's more than 3. But generally people refer to the 3 major differences between V30's which are Marshall, Mesa (aka original UK made), and Chinese (regardless of ohm rating). I've never even heard of this Bad Cat version, but Bad Cat has never caught my eye at all.
