Anybody know what year Marshall stopped using plywood backs on their 4x12's?

At some point in the 70's I believe. Some models currently use ply like the 1960TV and the Handwired stuff.

Anybody know for sure?
Paul, everything Marshall has exceptions but particle board back panels were rolled out in 1971. Could some still have come through with plywood? Sure, but it was not the standard build.

FTR, I would like to point out that I have received different responses from Marshall when asking about the back panels on their HW series cabinets. SInce then, I purchased a 2008 Marshall 1960AHW 4x12 that has a birch-ply back panel.

Paul, to be clear, I am talking about standard cabs, not the handwired series.

I was talking 70's cabinets. I have an early 70's with a plywood back and trying to nail down the year it was made.

From what I researched a few months ago it is going to be difficult to find an exact year. You may have to go with a range of years. The original speakers could date the cab with a little more accuracy.

Some people seem to think the JCM800 were the last one's with Birch panel, but that's not the case as I have a JCM800 that I stripped the tolex off of and it's that particle board.

I think it was a LONG time ago, late '60s very early '70s that ply backs stopped. I have two '74s that are not ply. I also used to own a '72 that wasn't ply.

Right from Doyle's "The History of Marshall (page 91):"

Plywood backs ended production between 1971 and 1972.

Does your cab have metal handles? Those lasted through 72-73. Are the original speakers in it? The speaker codes can help date it.

Unfortunately the cabinets are not as easy to date as the amps are.

If it has a plywood back and metal handles it is worthless, I'll stop over and take it off your hands!

Is it sooo hard to put a ply back and metal handles????
I think it would be less than 50-60 euros...

That's what's weird...mine has a plywood back, plastic handles, gold piping on the top, and no plastic corners. Unfortunately I bought it empty so I can't date the speakers.

It is probably similar to the components within the amps, whatever they happened to have laying around from various suppliers. Maybe they unearthed some pallets of plywood at a later date and decided to use them up.

Clarification on the back panel TGP link provided earlier. I emailed Marshall and asked about the back panels on the handwired cabinets. They stated that the 1960HW cabinets all have birch-ply back panels. All of the other 1960 cabinets (not HW series) since the early 2000's use MDF for the back panel. Does not help with the earlier stuff but may help direct those of interest.
