marshall cabinet question

oversized cabinets... what did they load them with, speaker wise? v30's? or was it 25 watt greens? or v60's? or what?

just need to know about the speakers - not necessarily the cabinets. not the 100 series, just the oversized marshall cabinets in general. just something else i have played through and know it sounds alright in the speaker department - cabinet is a different story.

i cant find any information on marshall's website about ANY oversized cabinets at all, and musicians-friend isnt turning up anything.

i had 65's before and they definately werent 65's. they didnt sound like 85's which i have played through and were sick bright and very unforgiving, so i doubt they were 75's based on the 2 mediums.

the only marshall cab which can be called "oversized" is the 1960TV which stands for tall vintage.
it's a little bit taller than standard marshall cab. and that's it. marshall has been doing the same cabs for years...which has been copied 1000000 times...even the term "oversized" is referred to the standard marshall cab

that was it im pretty sure. it wasnt the mode four cabinet, those are regular sized - if not a little smaller actually.

They are or were the same depth and width except 2-3 inches taller than the standard Marshall cabinets..
Loaded with Greenbacks...

That is what they were years ago anyways...
I tried them out in order to see how Greenbacks would sound..
And I also had hopes the difference in height would do something with the bottom end that my current cabinets did not do
and they did not do that to my ears...

i played my 5150 through it and it sounded great.

im toying the idea of loading the laney cabinets with greenbacks and v30's now. if i dislike the engl's im scheduled to go play earlier next year.

i liked the way my 5150 sounded through that cabinet speaker wise.

i cant find out what speakers were in the old laney cabinet i played, so this is my next option.

cabinet wise i do agree with you. it was very woofy, lower nasally almost, and seemed like it swallowed up alot of what my amp specializes in.

however the tone that it offered was simply amazing. well balanced, nice punch, didnt like my amplifier above 3 though if i recall correctly. it mixed and sounded amazing though.

if anyone else can suggest what the newer ones are i would greatly appreciate it. it would save me alot of hasstle later on possibly

The Laney 4x12 cabinet I had that came with the AOR head around 1990...
It didn't click with me until your Laney post,
I never could figure out why no other cabinet I have owned sounded like that...
Soon as I read where you typed H|H boom flashback of me taking the back of the cabinet off as a kid and seeing Orange/Red HH logo on the speakers...

But that cabinet had the Metal speaker grill..

yeah i was talking about the oversized marshall cabinet sounding woofy lol - the laney cabinets that i played were just sick as fuck - so smoothe, defined, not alot of punch, but very well balanced. took volume with absolutely no problem at all - nice headroom. those cabinets were solid and better than anything else i ever played.

the cabinets i played through were black and tan, with white piping, and tan clothing for the front with a white laney logo.

hell i might have to track down the guy in NC that owns those cabinets and play through them again to refresh my mind.

im surprised more people dont own laney cabinets... i think they are amazing. its what ill be getting. ill sell my slant cabinet and get 2 laney straight cabinets. i used to own 3 cabinets before i joined this board. its nice to have the diversity.

At the time the AOR heads were the only easy available heads that had Push/Pull tone pots in order to cut or boost frequencies..
If it wasn't for the fact that mine was stolen as kid I would probably still have it to this day...

The Dude refretting my guitar still has his AOR head listen to the leads on Overkill's Horrorscope album that is what he used for all of the lead work...

I will probably get flamed for saying it but
Laney was kind of like the Poor mans Marshall in my area anyways..
All of this stuff changes like a fashion trend between name brands..
Once a few fish go to a different side of the pond the rest of the fish sooner or later follow...
Use what ever the hell you think that sounds good..

i do know that the lead guitarist of angra (one of my all time favorite bands right up there with primal fear, mystic prophecy, serenity, iced earth, firewind, etc) has a signature head from laney, and also plays laney cabinets. all of the last 2 albums were recorded with laney stuff and its always sounded great.

its easy to forget that laney and marshall are both UK based. granted i know slawn's cabinets are top notch too, but so are randalls. IMHO though the UK stuff has always had a different vibe thats hard to explain. even the marshall cabinet with the celestions in it gave the distinct d chord european growl that no cabinet in sam ash or 5150 cabinet i have played has given.

i can easily see myself with a powerball running off 2 laney cabinets.

Mode Four cabs are oversized. They're 32' tall like the Mesa Recto Standard. Come loaded with 70 watt V30's or 100 watt Celestions (GK's).

D-Rock is right, the Mode Four's are oversized cabs...same size as the TV cab and the Boogies.

I owned one for several months...loaded with the GK100's. Cab quality was great, had the metal Marshall logo and trim. I'm just not a fan of the 100's nor am I a fan of oversized cabs...Marshall or Recto. Feel is too loose for me. But I got a crazy deal on one so I tried it out for a bit...sold it and pocketed some money.

Like D-Rock said...Mode Fours came loaded with GK100's and V30's. 1960TV came loaded with GB's.
