Never owned a Marshall and I'm not sure what year this JCM 800 is. EL34 2204 and sounds great! Definite smile factor plugging into this thing. Unmodded, at least as far as I can discern in way of no unsightly holes in the chassis or extra external knobs and such. The head will not be separated from the cab, as my local shop intends to sell them together.

The price...

I'll omit that detail for now. We'll come back to that in a bit. Instead, I'll first ask what seems a fair deal to you Marshall cats thus far. Could be interesting.

$1,400.00 would be a ballpark idea, with the head at $1k and the cab at $400.00

Make sure to ask if the speakers are original. If they are, I pretty much agree with marshallmel as far as ballparking. That rig can probably be gotten for a bit less on CL/Reverb, but not a whole lot less.

That was my first question. They have no idea what the speakers are. Somebody in the shop may know. But not the gentleman I asked. And he didn't care to ask any of the other staff. So... We'll say "not sure" for now.

Yeah, tbh, if it sounds good - it sounds good. But if I were dropping that sort of money at a professional business, I'd have them open the thing up to find out. Buyers shouldn't suffer because salesmen don't know about their product. If the speaker's aren't original (depending on how many), I could see ~$100 be knocked off the price... assuming mel's $1400 ballpark is accuratish.

I hear ya, Salos.

Let's throw another factor in that I failed to mention. This rig is a consignment deal, so the owner and the shop are each expecting a fair cut, as the owner stands to make more this way than by selling to them outright. And the shop, well... They've gotta come out on top one way or another, right?

At any point, should it become understandable that this dynamic would skirt on the outside of what would typically be a fair deal for the buyer or does does that generally not have much of an impact?

No idea what the norm for that situation is. I know that I would not pay more for it just because there's some shenanigans involved in who's selling it.... unless I really really really liked it and it was unique. But like I said earlier.... if you exercise patience and focus, I'm confident you can find this rig for under $1400 or right around that price from an individual rather than a store (depending your local market of course). I'm not trying to convince you to do that, just know that it's possible and you have options.

Just tell us how much they're asking man.

Hm. Well I appreciate it, guys. Looks like I'll just move along.

At $2,000 before tax, I'd be better off pursuing my 70's JMP.

Thanks for your thoughts!

It should be transparent to the buyer. It's not your problem or your fault that there is a middleman wanting a profit and a guy wanting as much as he can get for his stuff. the market price is what someone is willing to pay period. If the seller wants market rate he should sell it privately. The seller pays for the convenience of "added marketing" to the shop in the form of commission. The buyer does not. If you really really really want it, you'll pay whatever and that will be the market price, but don't let anyone bully you or guilt you into paying more than you should.

To the buyer it should not matter at all if it's consignment. If they try to manipulate you because of that, just remember it's only manipulation if you go along with it.

Yeah sorry man, too high IMO by quite a bit. If you're looking for unmodded JMP heads, they show up all the time on MyLesPaul and the GearPage (very often for fair prices), RT's seem to be modded usually.

70's cabs tend to be more expensive than the 80's cabs, so that's a bit more complicated.

My thoughts, as well. They were pretty shameless to justify the approach though. Least they were honest about it.

I appreciate it! Havent been around here much lately, but I'll be keeping an eye out.

$1,300-1,400 is about right. 2k is pushing it, especially for a later horizontal input model.

Cheers.

Is it true what some say about the topic of the input configuration- that is was only the 2203 models that were effected, as the quanity of capacitors were supposedly the biggest change, while the the 2204 models went unchanged?
