yeah... so, I am seriously considering selling off my Mesa gear and going all Marshall. More and more, all the bands and players I enjoy and respect the most use Marshalls. Many of them, who can afford anything and have gone through the gear mill, started off with and end up back with Marshalls (as have many of you fellow forumites).

The only downside I can see is trying to sell gear in this economy. Maybe I should just wait until I can afford to buy another head and start trying out the Marshalls. It sucks being broke and having to sell gear to get new gear.

Right now, I have Mesa Recto rack pieces. Given coming from Recto/5150 land, what is my first stop on the Marshall heavy metal train Rig-Talk? Oh, and toss some mojo and cross fingers for me getting a job soon so I can afford this adventure.

Thanks

Hang on to the Mesa as those tones are always needed, start saving for the Marshall. Good Luck on the job hunt!!!

Marshalls and marshall type circuits just have soul. Ive played a lot of amps and after a while, they bore me. Each Marshall has its own soul.

I agree with Marshal circuits, I can't really dig newer Marshalls though! I'd only buy old JMP's or newer modded Marshalls

Why not go with the Friedmen Modded Jet City JCA20H? $500 or so, and you've got the modded Marshall sound. I find that running Mesa and Marshall together is sonic bliss. I like the Marshall sound more than the Mesa for leads, and the Marshall just adds that chewy mid section to the Mesa for your rhythm sounds.

Nice Dave! I'm GASing for one. Did you get the saturation switch and the loop ?

I love a good Mark IV as much as any Marshall. IMO, you gotta have both bases covered.

Hmm... I think you guys are right, I should keep the Mesas. No offense to any of the fantastic builders/modders mentioned, but I want to start my Marshall journey with a Marshall...

I think Hatebreed and Nile use DSL/TSL... What other heavy bands use what kind of Marshalls? I think I want something like whatever the Kerry King one is, except without the Kerry King... What's that? Superlead? Superbass? What's the difference? Don't they both have KT88s?

The Kerry King amp is a JCM 800 with KT77's, a mid boost (mimics his KFK EQ curve), and a noise gate. Hannemin is using JCM 800's. They just did a rig rundown with Dunlop, can find it on YouTube.

yeah... I saw those vids. Like I said... without the KFK bit... I don't really like Heinekin. Maybe I could get a Negra Modelo theme. I think a lot of classic, metal tones are boosted JCM 800s.

If you're going the JCM 2000 route, get a DSL and not a TSL. You'll thank me.

Very true Jerry. I never let my Marshall's get too dusty. I plugged my Marshall that Jerry @ FJA did for me last year (Camel Toe Mod) through a 74 Marshall cab with the original GB's. Flipped it in the big ass mode and took off. Yep, they got soul.

There's KT88s in the KFK amp.

I've been accused of being indecisive-- I can't decide if that's true or if I'm just exactingly particular. (Pun intended)  ;)

Fender, Marshall, Mesa, etc... Why choose just one or the other?

Aloha Zach. First off, that is one Hell of a shirt. The kind of thing that acid flashbacks are made of   in a good way of course.

Your rig is magnificent bro, but no way I can swing the rack and switcher that makes it all possible.

Then again, who am I to argue with a man with a shirt like that?

I've owned the TSL, DSL, JVM410H, JCM900SLX and briefly a KK2203.
For heavy stuff the KK2203 owns hands down.
The SLX is also fantastic.
The DSL100 is not bad at all and the best of the JCM2000 line IMO. It's staple tone isn't that flexible though imo. Sounds huge with KT77's.
The TSL isn't that great, and I owned a JVM410H for 2 years and it really wasn't much better. Seemed like a jack of all trades but a master of none, I could never get it to "roar" like an 800, just lacked body and punch. The low-mid gain tones on it were a joke, they didn't sound anything like what they were trying to emulate. I tried 6 different types of power tubes in it as well as replacing the pre's multiple times, all sorts of different boosts & cabs and just had no luck.

If i could mod a 2203 to have a buffered serial effects loop, and if the beast control was switchable it would be perfect for what i wanted it for.
