Marshall guys - what do you use to tighten up the low end

I need thicker & tighter low end. I'd prefer to use something in front of the amp rather than having my tech do a few simple mods to it. The amp in use is 2203KK, rips live, but not thick enough recorded.

You could always try a boost but first I would try backing down on the gain and adding a touch more bass. The majority of heavy tones you hear recorded consist of multiple layered tracks that are relatively low gain.

I don't use much gain in the first place & adding bass just makes it more loose.

EQ in the loop if it has one, or put it right before the amp.

Otherwise some type of boost/overdrive like the Timmy, Bad Monkey, etc. with separate bass/treble controls.

Everything that involves putting something like an eq in the loop can be replicated with a plugin or something when editing at your DAW. An it's easier and tweakable AFTER recording ;) .

Tonefreaks Naked OD pedal is perfect. It tightens up the bass and can add a little hair. It does not change the character of the amp, but adds a little something. This pedal alone is not an od, but more of an enhancement to what you already have. IMHO

How about increasing the bass, dimed mids and presence?
Try an OCD pedal.

Maybe if the bias is set on the hot side, it can flub out a bit.

I like my KK with mids up and treble and presence way down. The KK boost up 1/3 only. Pretty mean and tight to me!

i have a 2203kk and had the same problem..tried all the obvious boost pedals,..ocd v4, eq, mxr gt od, boss compressor/sustainer, (these are the ones i have at my house) took the amp to the guitar store,..literaly tried everything they had,....nothing worked, put the amp up for sale,..no one would buy it,..(theres a glut of them right now)..got so pissed i turned the bias up about as high as it would go...(i'm ashamed to admit what the bias is set at)...THIS AMP NOW FUCKING ROCKS!!!!,...is it a ticking time bomb?....maybe,...it's been almost 2 months and i rush home to play it!!,..it is the best sounding 2203 i have ever heard!!!,..bar none!!,..

i have sold my other head,...and all of the above pedals are for sale,...I DONT NEED THEM!!,..i am now a guitar-cord-amp-cab guy!!,...and i love it!......for the first time ever i dont use any effects!!...i could careless that theres no effex loop!!...ha!..i laugh at all yee mortals with effects!!....and i'm as serious as a heart attack!...on ebay as we speak is my once beloved moog 104z analog delay..(for 21 years i have built my tone around some sort of delay,..NO MORE!)...also on ebay is my guyatone fr3000v ,..tube driven spring reverb,..some say it's even better than the old fender stand alones of the 60's......i checked the tubes fridaynight,..they still measure as new!,..

so my suggestion is to buy a bias rite,...and go at it!

Comeoooon, what's the bias set at? Please ...

I dont use it very often, but if you want beefed up and super tight, the Radial hot-british overdrive does that in spades, and the voicing switches work well too.

Like some have already mentions... check your tubes, bias and boost it with a quality overdrive/boost pedal.

Marshall and Marshall clones I have found take a little finesse on the bottom, or they get a little thin. What speakers and cab are you running it through? If an amp I buy needs a pedal, then the amp is usually destined for collecting dust bunnies and prefer my amps without any loops, tone suckage, level control issues, etc. As a general rule I find that Marshall's and the clones sound best overall when run through low wattage speakers such as 4 x Greenbacks or H-30's or copies of those speakers, and at 16 ohms. Turn the mids down, treble about 1:00, bass all the way up and presence around 2:00. This is for stock 2203's. Not sure what Marshall did to the KK model (and not real sure why he got a signature amp anyway come to think of it).

That's my two cents, for what its worth (about 2 cents).....

+1 on this. I always back the gain on my amp down when tracking in the studio. Makes for a fatter sound. Also helps to keep everything tighter.

well, the thread starter certainly knows how to record already... nice clips

BBE sonic stomp in the loop. End of story. Will take the "blanket" off the cab, and you can use the lo contour to shape your low end. But dont go for the "idiot setting". Or your amp;s gonna sound like a solid state.

Well, I'm gonna give the bias thing a try, but I doubt it's gonna help.

I don't like a lot of gain, I always use just enough to get the feel right, so less gain is no option here. The preamp gain is at 10:00 with KK gain 9-10:00, definitely not a lot of gain for this amp. Mids are around 2-3:00 with everything else around noon, with highs just a bit less than noon. I have tried to lower highs & presence more, but it took away the bliss out of this amp. The speaker was the Black Label EVM12L.

Just so you all know where I'm coming from, I'm a long time Diezel user. Compared to Bogners it's probably tighter. The amp is being used for really heavy progressive 1-2 string riffage. So far I'm leaning towards Maxon OD-820 Pro. Like I said in live situation it's alright, could be a tad better, but I don't really mind it the way it is. For recording I need more body & I need it compressed.
