I've got a relatively stock JCM 2000 (has upgraded transformers/choke) that I'm thinking about having modded. Definitely doesn't sound like other JCM 2000's I've played (quite a bit brighter/raw to the point of being harsh even with presence all the way off). It doesn't sound 'bad' by any means but I'd definitely like to get something a little more in the vein of a hot-rodded sound ala Cantrell/AIC or even some form of 'Jose' mod. I've tried a bunch of OD/Drives on all channels as well as rolled a bunch of tubes through to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestions?

The Marshall forum is full of mods for the DSL well over 100 pages of reading. There's also a fortin mod floating around as well.

I've heard clips of Mike Fortin's DSL mods that sounded great. Contact him on Facebook, he might be able to point you in the right direction. He's here on RT as well, but I don't see him around very often.

Whatever you do, be sure to do the speaker jack mod while you're in there.

I've talked to Mike Lickliter about a mod for my 2000 as well. He's recently back here at RT.

I have a Voodoo modded JCM2000 DSL that I've had for 10 years and I think it's the cat's ass. I used it for 5 CDs so I have a plethora of clips. If you want to hear any let me know what style you're into and I'll dig out a few the closest to that style.

Check marshallheads.com as well. I spent tons of time on both sites. Also, search this forum. Someone documented the Fortin mods they did to their JCM 2000.

Found this copy for the fortin mods:

" I stumbled across them while looking for mods to do to my jcm2000 dsl100:

Main
I've tried both 220pf and 470pf over R23. Much prefer the 220pf.
1uf for C12 for less mids. . The .68uf is just to much, I like this value if you are going to keep .022uf on C8.
R12=22K I like the stock 68k, as it tames some of the gain.
R13=100K
C17= .001UF
C13= 2.2UF
C8=.0047UF I like .022uf as it adds a little beef back to the amp
C16=.0022
C6&C7= .1UF
Input
C10/C11/R19/R20 all jumped. More gain and like the voicing of the amp more like this.
R36 15k, C22 Jumped, C19 470p Left Stock. Mid scoop option is not a dramatic before and is way more usable. Great for more modern tones, chords, drop tunings.
C12 .0047 I love this. Amp gets aggressive when down and compressed when gain turned up, I also like .001uf if don't want such a drastic change in brightness when lowering the gain knob.

Output Jack Schematic:
R19 IS THE FB RESISTOR, TRY IT ON THE 8 OHM TAP INSTEAD OF 4 OHM."

-what speaker's & cab you using?

-usually the transformer/s & choke mod are all you need

-also, presence up, treble down

I've done quite a bit of work on my DSL100. I started with the Joey mods from the Marshall forum and then did a choke and new output transformer. Much better than stock, and the Joey mods fix the speaker jacks issue and tweak the clean / crunch side as well. Also, I thought the choke was more worthwhile than the opt to be honest.
Like I said, much better than stock but not really special.
Anyway, I went over the amp again and did the Fortin mods that are posted above, ( I like to experiment and the dsl wasn't getting used) and all I can say is WOW!! Really gives the amp a unique voice.
You can do the Fortin mods and the Joey mods together, just go with the Fortin stuff where they overlap.

Highly recommended.
