Marshall JMP-1 / Voodoo

Had one in the past / stock / sold it.
Now I'm thinking about the Voodoo modded one...Platinum ...
What's your experience? Thanks.

P.S. I'm not wrong with the subforum. :)
 
I had mine modded....total waste of money.

Do yourself a favour and just get the transformer upgraded.
The rest is smoke and mirrors... made no tonal difference at all.

I've owned and used my JMP-1 exclusively since they were first released so I'm talking from intimate knowledge of its tone.

According to Voodoo's official page, the Platinum mod offers some Mercury Magnetics.

Yea.
The transformer is an improvement.
It makes the unit quieter.
 
I had a voodoo modded jmp1, but not the platinum mod. I thought it made a big difference especially with the cleans. It made clean2 channel 1000% better. Dirty2 (or crunch2 or whatever it was called) was much less muddy even when using the bass shift. The gain was cleaner and just sounded better, but the difference was not nearly as noticeable as with the cleans.
 
Would love to know more about the jmp1.I recently bought a dead mint one(stock) and the thing screams through my vht classic poweramp.And Ive got a Fish,x88r,quad, triaxis,triple giant,and badcat pre to compare it with. On various forums the jmp1 gets a bad rap because of its use of diodes in the circuit and only one tube per channel(so the tubes are barely doing anything), but I really like this pre.For me,it offers more marshall tones than any of my other pre's. Ive talked with Trace @ voodoo at great length about the mods..He's a great guy...Can anyone purchase the upgraded transformer and install it?.prob a dumb question but just asking.
 
Little B, just curious, what have you been told by Trace about the JMP-1 modification? Also you just want the transformers to be changed without any other mods?

I'm not sure / after reading the whole information at Voodoo' official page/, are they put in an additional, third tube?

No 3rd valve.
The only thing visible, other than the transformer in mine, is a few caps attached to the valve sockets and covered in silicone.
As I've said , I can hear no tonal differences of any kind with my platinum mod.
Additionally, be aware that it adds nothing to the resale value.
Think carefully before you waste your money.
 
Trace just very informatively went over all the mod packages,what they do,and some artists that are currently using the jmp1 exstensively..and since I do session work,he went over what mods would be best for me..He's a great guy and we talked for a long time about gear in general too.I wish more amp guys would have his demeanor..Love his mods,love what he does to the jmp1,now having said that,.I ran my stock jmp1 into a vht classic into 2 deizel f.l. 4x12 cabs and was more impressed than I thought I was gonna be.Ive read at some other places that the transformer makes a difference.I do know the poweramp makes a big big difference with this pre.I think a lot of people who were disappointed with this pre may need to look at the "whole" signal chain.Im just curious about the jmp1 in general...
 
I use my unmodded JMP-1 with a $40 JOYO overdrive infront of it and couldn't be happier. Instead of modding just try a clean boost or overdrive with the gain on 0.5 and high volume infront of the preamp.
 
I have used every voodoo mod for a jmp1 and to be honest, Never realized much if any difference between a stock one?? :confused:

To all: whats in the rest of your signal chain w/ the jmp1? ie:poweramp/cab....just curious

I have 2 setups for mine..
..Marshall Power amp into stereo 4×12
..Palmer simulator direct to desk.

Only real difference is the physical interaction I get with the amp/cab setup.

Mine is

Guitar -> Overdrive -> JMP -> Gmajor2 -> EL84 20/20 -> stereo 2x12
