Marshall JMP 2203 or something similar

I am really wanting a JMP 2203, I really like it's flexability and it's ability to take pedals.

Prices for marshall amps along with alot of used gear is higher than normal.

The SV20H has caught my attention but there have been complaints of it being too bright.

I also have been looking at Metropoulos or Germino models.

Also are there any other amp builders I should check out that will get me the JMP 2203 feel/tone?

There's dozens of amps similar to the 2203. Without knowing your budget it's a little hard to help - a handwired model from a small builder is going to be comparable or more in costly than finding an original though.

Ceriatone possibly if you're on a budget.
 
Check out the Rockitt Retro amps. The "76" option is the 2203 or 2204.
I stupidly sold mine and have regretted it. I grew up w/ those amps from when they were first introduced (75/76)
I had the 50 watt version. 6550's and he put a push/ pull on the Volume control that defeated the Bright Cap. Metro Effects Loop. It was a killer amp.
 
Just looking to see what is out there. A used Marshall JMP is $2500+.

Wanted to see what is out there and sounds very close or maybe a little hot rodded.

I'm trying to learn more about the Marshall JMP series too.

Any help or information is greatly appreciated.
 
I would get the SC20 and call it a day. It’s much easier to get it to the sweet spot on the master volume. The preamp is the same as it’s big brother. I would not call them bright compared to the 100 watter, only that you will get less oomph in the low-end because of the wattage difference which some may perceive as more bright.
 
A good builder can get the job done as previously mentioned...but I'd bide my time and just scope the usual used spots like GC.com or Music go Round....you will find one for under 2K eventually. After all the years of being a gear fiend I've learned that if you want the real thing, that's the only one that will scratch the itch.

Splawn all day long... 1 Gear=Plexi/Stock 2203/ 2nd Gear Modded JCM800, 3rd Gear/ Higher Gain Modded JCM800

Check out the clips on Splawns site or Youtube, if that tone won't work for you then you should really find an Vintage 2203 but it won't have the options or the extra gain that the Splawn will provide. When my 1979 2203 which was awesome stock started having intermittent problems not tech could seems to determine I sent it to Scott Splawn rebuild the entire amp in 2003 with his early mods which eveolved into his Quickrod amp.

My 2203 has never let me down since 2003 after the rebuild, it's a monster sounding amp, and IMHO is as Marshally as they come.
 
Metropolous MetroPlex isn’t made anymore and is geared more to George’s take on high gain Marshall that’s also capable of copping true 68 plexi tones at the same time. This is the exact amplifier I own:



The closest thing you can get today from him is the DVL, but the filtering was increased to not fall apart at higher volume. I still own the MetroPlex and it would cover your goals, but at $3500-$4000 USD there are better options out there for JCM800. I grabbed it for gig friendly features centered around its 68 plexi tones it can also do and as a backup amplifier to my 74 2203.

Check out splawn quick rods. I also recommend Ceriatone’s 2203 kit amp - better than what you can get from Marshall right now IMO.

Yes, it all depends on how much you are willing to spend.
 
If money is no object, I am particular to the Bogner modded Marshall tones.
 
Depending on how far down the modded Marshall path you want to go, you could always go for a Bogner Ecstasy 101B

Dialed in correctly and boosted they can put a hurting on whatever modded Marshall platform flavor is hot for the week on RT

Yes and yes, I had have had many amps in the last 37 years and the Bogner Ecstasy was my favorite modded Marshal tone.
 
Splawn all day. I had a '79 JMP 2203.I sold it after I did a side by side and discovered I could pretty much nail the tone with the Splawn with the right settings and also have a ton more flexibility.
