yes they can IMHO.

The crunch channel does a great job for that type of sound and Id recommend using greenback speakers.

I think they would get by live but not in a recording environment for a really authentic 70's tone. They're just too stiff in the low end for that slightly giving overdriving sound a 70's head gets. Also not as rich in the top end. These are only small differences though and I would use one as a back line amp no problem, but for recording or a personal amp for 70's stuff I would much rather use a JMP.

Depends to which length of authenticity you want to go, but I know it can very close. It's a great amp.

I pretty much agree with this. Although I love my JVM 410H, I love it for its clean sounds and ultra high gain sounds. The in between tones are a little stiff.

I agree with this and most definitely what skora and Killertone said. The amp can be a bit stiff but you really have to assess the situation though. If you want a swiss army knife to use Live, its pretty tough to beat any of the JVM's but if you want a DEAD ringer 70's tone/feel and only that, then id look elsware. Another thing to consider when comparing the JVM with an older Marshall is that the JVM does not have a choke and that will change the feel or the give of the amp and you also have to take into consideration of how the old 70's sounds were created. Most of the 70's Marshall tones were created with 2-3 gain stage amps cranked with or without a master volume or a w//wo a pedal. Ive tried this with the JVM set on a JCM800 type sound and cranked it (something I will not do live) And it sounded pretty killer.

Hope this helps.

Spot on.

I remember cranking mine, and what a monster. I am seriously gassing for one again.

IMHO, if you want to get a good ole crank going, just watch your gain (keep it down) and get to moving some air.
Again, if it has to be a dead ringer there is no way to go but an old Marshall. But, if you are satisfied with getting close then there are a lot of amps that can get you there. Even a relatively high gain, and lowering your guitars volume. Humbuckers and volume.

Of course you might find dialling in that sound on a completely different amp will deliver the result with an interesting edge to it.

Yea, it can definitely do it

The JVM has got to be the most versatile amps out there. One of my favorites.

thanx guys, i get you on the stiffer low end but how would you describe the difference in the highs

If you do not have a JMP to compare it to, you most likely will never notice it. I owned a 410 from 2007 to 2009 and it was a killer amp. The beauty of the JVM's is that you can mimic most of the historic Marshall tones at reasonable volumes. I only sold it because it did not look old :| My brother and friend bought 410's and still have them.

Yeah, you can get there. OD1 Green without pedals, Crunch Orange or Red with a nice Overdrive and you're there.

A couple of simple mods (including the addition of a choke) solved the "stiffness" factor for me...it can now (to my ears) hang with the older and hand-wired stuff in "feel" and raw wide open power.

Well, I did some clips with my jvm205h awhile back.. I modded it myself. I think it does a great old school tone here is a clip.. Sm57- and an audio technica atm650 even blend no after eq through a peavey triple x cab..
