Anyone have any experience with these cabs? Are they woofy/flubby on the low end? Good cabs?

Thanks!

i have the one with g12k100 and they are not flubby at all but of course different speakers...mine is slanted. Its great quality wood in my opinion

Thanks. I think I will give it a go.

I have used them before and they are nice. Not 100% sure on dimensions, but it's a lot like a 1960 cab just with V30's instead of T75's. An MF400 is similar just with K100's.

Great cab, they go very cheap. I have an early one (2002 I think) with U.K.-made Vintage 30MF speakers before they moved the speaker production to China.

The speakers themselves are supposed to be darker/deeper sounding than the typical V30. Though I have never directly A/B’d regular V30’s so I don’t know how big a difference there is. The cab itself is oversized and similar in size to a Mesa recto cab (like a half inch narrower if I recall correctly). Fully plywood construction, as opposed to the 1960’s which have an MDF back.

Overall it looks like it’s Marshall’s attempt to try to ape the Mesa recto style. While the cabs are pretty well regarded I can’t say I’ve ever read a good review of the mode four amp heads.

The MF280 isnt wired stereo, just a single mono input on the back.

Very solid and very heavy. I really like mine with my recto.

I had one and I thought it seemed very solidly built and I thought it looked great. But it has a different sound so if you accustomed to Marshall with GBs or Mesa w/V30 (which sound different from each other of course) it may not work you. Buti t may be just the sound you're after, there are some here who's opinion I respect that like them. The mids are definitely different.

I had one for a while. Size is bigger than a 1960. More like a Recto oversized or Marshall TV cab size. Built well and heavy as all hell.

The V30 versions are a little darker than normal V30's and due to the larger cabinet size, I found the cab to be on the dark side but it could be EQ'd brighter on the amp. If it is a good deal, buy it! If you end up not liking something about it, part out the speakers or keep the speakers and move the empty cab if possible. Should be close to a wash if the deal is right.

The one that I had was bought back from the guy I got it from. He has had it locally on CL recently again for $400 I think.

Thanks for the input. Because of the current status I am unable to try it out. The cab has been on CL for months. Hes asking $500. I was hopeful to get for $400. Hes not budging. In the meantime Ive found an 800 cab in great shape for a very good deal. I think im going to go that route.

There has been one up here under $300 for a bit IIRC. I personally would not pay $400. YMMV.

I've learned never to buy a used cab without removing the back and double checking in person with your own eyes the speakers within it. I bought a used MF280 for $300. Plugged into it on site and it sounded pretty good. I had a feeling those speakers may not be the V30s, so AFTER I paid cash for it, once I got it home, sure enough, it has 4 K85s, and I don't like the K100/85 speakers. It even has the proper, aluminum badge that reads MF280!

However, the cab itself is really solid and has great thump. So I'm debating on keeping it and changing speakers or just reselling it.

YMMV. Good luck!

My story with MF280’s. I bought one on clearance from GC without plugging it in years ago. Decided to sell it about a month later as I had enough cabs. Same day buyer was coming to pick up, I plugged into it to make sure everything was cool and... it was TOO cool... it sounded REALLY GOOD and I regretted selling it but, the process was set in motion already. I made a mental note to get another one if I saw one in nice shape for cheap and I did a year or two later. Still have it and would never sell. Don’t think it’s worth selling the best $400 and under cab you can buy in my opinion.

I ALWAYS check the inside for the speakers. Always have always will.

I remember a story on a forum a long time ago that somebody bought a cab, got home popped the back of to see hundreds of cockroaches. That's worse than the wrong speakers!
