MARSHALL Question: JMP or 800 with pedal or Modded marshall

Just curious what you prefer and why? also what pedal is the go to for the gain....

I have a ToneFreak Naked OD...sounds great in front of Marshalls...

I am leaning on just getting a 70's 50 watt JMP and running a pedal...

But the marsha/Friedman is knocking loudly....

I agree with Kurt. Ive done both, and still have both , but theres something about a good JMP with an OD that just cuts. Matter of fact, Kurt sold me one of my killer JMP's! Or was it a trade? Too many deals to remember.

The JMP screams with a good OD/boost in front of it.

I prefer 100 watt JMP 2203's becuase of the PUNCH they deliver,
this one's modded by D. Friedman the Kitchen Sink mod, this clip is straight amp with a Les Paul.

Here's the same amp w/a ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive [ now called the bezerker OD same specs as original] played with an old Charvel w/a EMG-81.

I have played a lot of Modded Marshalls over the last few years and have owned one as well and also played a lot of other amps out there.....When i got my 1979 JMP 10 months ago and boosted it with a Boss SD-1 in front for me there is no other amp out there that compares to it IMO :) I have not have had any gas for any amp that is on the market since....They just rip  Hope that helps

A stock JMP/800 with a boost pedal is a formidable tone!

I would start there and then branch out if you want to try one of the many great modded flavors available, but would recommend you get a second amp to mod and always keep (at least) one stock...

Also don't forget you can boost a modded amp as well with a pedal. It might sound self defeating at first but it's just another option imo.

although u can get a great tone with a stock jmp and a good od pedal, its not the same as having a modded amp with the extra gain built right into the amp. I wish it were that simple but Once I was spoiled by owning some great marshall mods I found I couldnt go back to a stock amp with a pedal as easily as before. Then again, theres a flood of gread pedal builders in the market today that make achieving a great tone a little easier.

i prefer boosting with a pedal because i can play more dynamically with cleaner tones. I've owned about 5 or 6 JMPs, still have 3 and and 82 800', tried mods in the 80s', fun for 1 week and one trick pony stuff, but went back to stock and will never go back. Although i have done some voicing mods but some great amp builders/techs. In terms of achieving high gain, there are a ton f pedals on the market that have enough gain. Fulltone OCD, xoctic, BBE Preamp, Lovepedal800...but honestly an SD-1 or Ts-808 is really all you need to make them bark. especially with humbucker guitars.

I'm with two posts up  I think I was spoiled by my old FJA Marshall. Any other Marshall I've plugged into just won't get me where that one did :(

I just got a 76 2203 and it sounds bad ass with my Keeley TS-9 out front. Not even adding gain, just clean boosted. It rips.

What did you use for a boost on that clip? It sounds smokin!
A Barber Direct Drive. Also as per Marshall engineer and Vintage Modern designer Steve Dawson I changed two caps, C1 and C2, which simply makes the VM a little darker and gives it more gain. Not a night and day difference from stack but cetainly a difference. Read more here if you want to know details.

Thanks for listening.

That Barber DD is high on my "check it out" list. How would you compare it to a tube screamer type? Better yet, I think it has similar controls or eq to the bad monkey which is currently on my board and refuses to be kicked off.. have you compared the two? At the end of the day do i notice differences in OD's "that" much? No.. but i do notice something and right now for me, the bad monkey beat out RC, BB,SD-1, my modded YJM 308 to grey specs, EQ pedals, and a boutique clean boost. Still though, there is always that maybe something out there thought that is usually associated with gear addiction that creeps in.

What speakers are in that clip with the VM by the way?

Along the same lines...50 watt vs 100 watt....
what is the biggest "tone" difference?
