It does make it difficult for someone with a used amp to sell. They dropped “prices” significantly last year but have had zero product to sell here in the US. Which means a guy with a mint 2yr old amp has to take a bath for essentially no reason at all
Most tight switches I see are done by reducing the coupling cap around the first stage. Marshall is using a resistor to ground for their tight switch? Any gut shots on the 800?

That's just a guess on my part. It could be a coupling cap switch. But it could also just be a resistor off the gain pot to ground, a'la the "feel" control in some hot-rodded amps. Either way, pretty simple. At least the 800 Modified has some better options than the 1959, IMO.
