12 amp choices in 2 weeks....
No backbone... None!... flip-floppin like a carp...... :aww:
What a shame.....

ALOHA Harry :) Hope all is well. Let me know when you want to come visit the Honolulu chapter of HOM. Got some plate lunches, beers and guitar gear just waiting.

It's not a very loud amp, IMO Get the 100 if possible

I spent some time with the 100w version and didn't really care for it. It had a very harsh tone to my ears no matter how I set it. I ran my guitar (Rand "superstrat" with an Anderson H2+ in the bridge) straight in though...if you are shaping your tone with pedals, it may be a good match.

Have you played the DSL and the Vintage Modern side by side? It's pretty hard to beat the DSL on the crunch channel if you're using pedals IMO.

I dunno bout that, I have the dsl, jvm, jmp, a 600 combo with enough vintage mods to it to get it a nice plexi tone, and I personally would take the VM100 over the DSL100. just more articulate to my ears. They both do some nice gain, but they get there differently if you get my drift.
then again, you can never have too many marshalls

You know, I haven't actually done that Darren and that's a great idea. I'm pretty sure they have both at the shop. I am playing phone tag right now but will hopefully get a call soon about the amp(s) :D

I am looking at this amp again instead of the DSL. I'm thinking this amp and matching 4x12, and a slough of pedals may be a good fit for me.

Which would you go with, the 50 or the 100?

Hey Tweed,

You can always take 2 tubes out of the 100w format and change the impedance on the back to convert it to a 50 watter.

Cheers,
Mike

I know thats a typical trick. I read a thread at the Vinatge Modern forum asking about this and the VMs designer Steve Dawson strongly urged the user not to do this but I cannot remember his reasoning.

I only suggest becuase they seem voiced kinda differently to me, I thought the DSL was stronger in the low mids (only on crunch channel), where the Modern Vintage had more high end stuff going on.

What did you think of the DSL's clean channel?

I love my DSL, but ever since I got the VM, the DSL doesn't get much play time. I personally think the VM sounds more natural/organic and has that perfect amount of sag in the low end. Not too loose, and not super tight. I guess you could say it's somewhat "chewy" . I don't know, I just think it sounds really good (this is with the matching VM cab).

That said, I don't gig with the VM because I need my clean and distorted tones to be basically equal in volume, which isn't really feasible for a stock VM since it's not a true 2-channel amp. I believe Jerry P does a mod which allows a separate volume control for both dynamic ranges. I'd like to go that direction sometime, but I just can justify spending more money on gear, at the moment.

Regardless, both are great amps, and you can't go wrong either way

The DSL has a really nice clean channel IMO
