I always see people rave about marshall gain, but I've also heard that there are a few marshalls with exceptional cleans.....

which ones?

I know it's a sleeper, only made for a couple years... and I know the gain wasn't traditional Marshall... But I love the cleans on the JTM-30 combo.
A great little amp-- Distortion is fuzzier than your typical Marshall (but a good fuzz), and the cleans are great. Mine's loaded with 6l6's vs. the normal el-34's, though, so that might have something to do with it. Seriously a great little amp for the price, and all tube, too

Of course the real JTM45 but... The recent discontinued handwired Marshall 1974x combo has gorgeous cleans and overdrive. One of my go to amps.

so the JTM45 cleans are what? Fenderlike ? what can I compare them to?

JTM45 sure. Or, just about anything before the JCM900. Plexi, Super Lead, JMP, JCM...just roll back the volume and presto...pretty decent cleans.

Almost any pre-metal panel Marshall can be dialed in for great cleans. That's pre 1970. Some metal panels will do it but most were such "stiff" fire-breathers (not to be confused with Gay Mardi Gras), they just didn't have the bounce on the clean side.

awesome, I'd like to try one own then, I've always had the misconception that Marshall cleans were on the dull side.... my bad then

Most people plug into the hi sensitivity input and set for stun. There's some nice cleans to be found in the low input. Again, gotta say I'm talking about anything before the 900's. Marshall hasn't been making them the same since. Well...the YJM Sig seems promising.

I think jtm 45 has beautiful full sounding cleans, If u have a 70's jmp with the 6550 they have nice cleans with a ton of headroom, too much for my taste even. I used to have a silver jubilee and many liked the cleans from that amp also. Also, as said above, the 1974x has some killer cleans and semi cleans and the overdrive is killer also. I think many marshall users forget about the other inputs and channel jumping and blending the volumes, some of the best cleans I have heard were achieved that way.

I'm with Trev...anything before 1970 has great cleans...anything from 70 to 80 can have great cleans if you run it with run of the mill Sovtek 5881s.
