First let me start by saying I'm not huge fan of his so I ask those who are like me do you find that after hearing his work did he influence you and find yourself playing things that remind yourself of his style, I do.
I am sure a lot of people did, but didn't really think about it. It is pretty amazing how he went to Japan and reinvented himself. He is more popular there now than he was here when Megadeth was at it's peak, probably.
Huge fan myself, especially the Shrapnel years. And Megadeth. He has such an exotic style. I incorporate bits here and there of some of his techniques and note choices.
I love his years with Megadeth mainly the Rust in Peace era. His style really fit each song on that album. Tornado of Souls is probably my fav of his work on that album followed by Hanger 18. I really love his wide vibrato. I havent really listened to his solo work after he left Megadeth. I wasnt a huge fan of Cacophony though.
He is a considered a hometown hero to many guitarist in Hawaii. I have a buddy who even took lessons from him back in the 80s when Marty was just another poor starving artist. I like his playing on Rust in piece but outside of that meh... But i'm more of riff loving kind of guy and not so much into the shred stuff. Most of my guitar friends think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread and even listen to his solo albums. I have a hard time taking him seriously with the way he over dramatizes his body movements and facial expressions when he plays especially on his Japan show. Guy can rip tho.
When I was a kid and got warmed up, I felt like Hendrix. When I got older, I felt like Yngwie after I was warmed up. Now that I'm old, when I'm feeling it, I'm Marty!
I really loved his Shrapnell stuff as well as RIP, but he lost me when he went Jpop. Having said all of that, his last release (not the live one) that had a ton of guests on it, is fantastic. I can cop a lot of guitar players, but he is one that I can never get quite right. His use of reverse (or prebends) into the little trills, is just so hard to get in time and pitch as quickly as he does.
