Im looking to buy one of these and use it primarily as a clean boost in front of my Dual Rec. Does anyone have any experience with either one? Does one have a greater benefit of the other in terms of tightness or attack it adds to the tone of the amp? Are there any other clean boosts better than either maxon for use with a Dual Rec? Any help would be much appreciated.

I know Rectos love the 808.. It sucks a little more bass than the 820 which in the rectos case isnt a bad thing.

xotic ac boost is better for a clean boost imo. My old dual rec. loved it. I have a maxon 808 as well and the ac boost was alittle better. Had less static and tightened her up alittle better. It also didnt color the clean channel as much as the maxon did.

I feel like the 820 is a bit juicer and helps alleviate the stiffness of the Rectos.

I used the 808 for a couple years with my old dual rec. Didn't mind the bass loss, never had gthe bass very high on the rec anyway. But the maxon really made that thing sustain and sing!

Haven't experienced the OD820, But I have had a Keely TS-9 + Mod, and a Maxxon OD808 RI>Stock. I played them side by side, and ended up going with the OD808. Was cheaper to buy, and really easy to replace, even on the road. I used it with a 2203 Head, and it kick ass. Missed the low end of that Marshall, though. I imagine that it would be fine with the Recto. OD808, 0D820, either way, you'll do well with either.

From what I understand Lozgreg knows his stuff, so if he recommends the OD820, I bet you'll be satisfied with it.

i have played all of the tube screamer variations and i have to say straight out of the box the maxon 808 is the best. Thats the original circuit. i would love to try out the green rhino just for its added options.

When plugged into the front of my Rev F the OD808 sounds and feels like a natural extension of the amp.

I've tried various other ODs and none of them integrate quite so well. I figure that's the reason that particular pairing has become so famous.

Considering your saying its juicer, does it still tighten up and add more definition to the recto like the OD808? Another users take on the OD820 was its like an OD808 but it don't squash the lows as much as the 808 and has more saturation. It seems a lot more people "metal players" favor the OD808 based on what I see in rigs and setups thru research. Any idea why this is? Do you think this is because the OD808 has a better characteristics for metal players or may be the fact the the OD820 is more expensive or possibly another reason I'm not aware of? Its a tough choice for me, because I hear good things about both of them.

both are great. you will be happy with either. one thing to consider is that the 820 runs at 18 volts ( i believe, maybe im wrong). A lot of guys dig OD at 18 volts. ODsat 18v usually have a very wide and articulate EQ field... but whatevs. hope that helped.

I recommend the Way Huge Green Rhino. I have it and it's great, even for a clean boost application. It's modeled after all the TS's, but it has alot more you can use to shape the tone. It's really great.

I like the mi audio blues pro myself, not a absolute clean boost, but a great bottom end

I've bought both
I liked the OD820 as a clean boost better on the clean channel or low-gain settings.
OD820 is really amp like and is really versatile
If you wanna use it as standalone overdrive on a clean amp, get the OD820, it beats the OD808 everyway
Otherwise, if you're a true metal player, get the OD808
I liked the OD808 as a high-gain clean boost more.
More tight, harmonics are easier to get and it adds the perfect amount of gain to any amp and pickups.
So
I mostly play metal and that's why I kept the OD808
