the mids are just weird to some people cause they are used to that mesa boogie hi-gain white noise

So is that what it is? I guess you mean the Recto high gain sound as what some people are used to? I never liked that hollow Recto Rumble sound, never.

To me this "Weird Mids" stuff is completely new. I never understood the term. It just seems like it's referring to a mid-spiked sound, where a particular narrow frequency band is boosted, e.g. the Rockman Squawk (500Hz/800Hz), Stryper's mid-boosted sound (EQ in front of the amp), the cocked-wah sound (which is what the Rockman Squawk sound originated from).

I guess what makes it 'weird" is that sometimes an EQ is used to boost a narrow frequency range in the mids, say 800Hz, but then scoop out the rest of the mids in the signal, later on in the amp. So it 'cuts through' and sounds spiky, yet 'hollow'- there's no breadth or roundness.

ah man, hollow is a perfect way to describe the "no mid recto rumble". thumpa thump on the low end, white noise on the high end and nothing in the middle.

mids should be like your previous avatars hindparts

All these references to Mesa Boogie   , Splawn mids are quite different than my old Marshalls which is what they are compared to more often. Definitely an acquired taste.

Race,
is he going to stay with the QR or is he leaning toward the Orange he was using in the other video?
Any feedback from Michael?
Cool story by the way!

He told me that he had ordered a Quick Rod and a Pro Mod--not sure if he intends to W/D/W or stereo. I thought it was super-interesting (and a testimonial to the tone of the QR) that he preferred the QR on 1st gear, OD2 with his T21 up front. It only took him about 2 minutes to dial in my QR to his liking. At first he was hesitant to mess with my settings but I told him I had them written down and he could adjust away--he thought that was the coolest thing ever, that I just showed up and was like, "here's my amp--change whatever you want." Stryper left for Japan after those LA shows but I know Michael can't wait to get his Splawn amps and get playing. We agreed these amps put out the tone that inspires you to play more and more because it sounds so good!

Cheers,

scott's building him 3 4x12s too...not sure what speakers....so you're probably right about the w/d/w configuration...question is, how can you do that with two amps on top of it? I'm kind of a mongo when it comes to the whole wet/dry thing..lol

I REALLY need to try a Quickrod. Everything I hear sounds great. Man, I think I like this wierd mid thing too.

yes..yes you do =D They're not weird...they're just there..in your face...tight and angry...kinda like some of my ex girlfriends...but that's not important right now...

seriously...there's nothing weird about them..the tone is what it is, got nothing to do with odd mids or this or that...people are either going to like the tone at the end of the day or not (pretty much the same story as anything really)...is it a hot rodded marshall tone? yeah..but it's scott's take on it..so it's probably different than what people would think...maybve that's why weird got tossed in there...and got beaten into the ground like a dead horse..but, once again..that's not important right now

one thing is for sure..you will never ever get buried in a mix
NEVER EVER EVER !!!!!!

i'll take the mids and center stage any day of the week. you can enjoy your mud and mid scoop

I like you..I think we could be great friends
LMAO

 Splawn is where it's at!

I'll drink to that! *burp*

Just guessing here, but I would bet he'll run into the QR, then slave out into the Pro Mod so he has one power stage running EL34B and one running KT88, both with the QR Preamp tone.

Cheers,

interesting..when you slave that way, doesn't one power section take over for the other? I'm confuzzled..lol..maybe he'll run them in stereo

Will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out as the FX loop on Splawns is serial, so he'd have to run a "Y" cord out of the QR FX send, one end right back to the FX return on the QR and the other end to the FX return of the Pro Mod.

Just running a "Y" cord out of his pedal board and running stereo may actually be easier. We'll see...
